Brand new T43 15" thinkpad stops going to standby

I've had this machine for less than a week, and after i still all my office, adobe and work applications on there, the machine somehow stopped going to standby mode on its own (it still has the ability to go into standby mode)

for example, i set it to go standby after 10 mins of idle while on battery, yet it's still ON after 30 mins of idling.

But if i close the LID or go to shut down, standby, the machine goes into standby mode normally.

what could be the problem here?

Sounds like 2 different configurations issues:

the laptop has 2 ( maybe 3 if you have a dock ) sets of power management properties:

1. when connected to AC
2. when not connected to AC

You may have the properties set in one but not the other.

To change them:
Right click a section of the desktop with nothing, pick "Properties" -> pick the "Screen Saver" tab, pick "Power" towards the bottom.

Set up how you want the computer to behave when connected to power and not connected to power in the first screen that comes up.

To change how the computer manages "lid closed" or 'shut down" events, go to the "Advanced" tab and change the settings there.
