hard drive noise

#1 Post by thinkcool » Wed Dec 21, 2005 3:02 pm

hi everbody!
i just bought a T40 "wildly refubrished", 1.3 Ghz, 256 ram, 40g hdd, and intel wifi, it's not in a perfect state, except the keyboard and the screen, well i really discover that IBM (Lenovo) do and hope will do the best;
this is my question for which i didn't find an answer on the forum:
I swithced from a Dell C400 with a 4200 rpm HDD, it was really silent; on the IBM, with it's 5200 rpm there is a little whistle coming from the HDD, i put it out and started the machine with a live linux cd, there was no noise at all, so is that normal for this type of hard disks or there is something wrong with it? (passed all diagnostics well)
thanks all folks for this wonderfull website, sorry for my english, so enjoy it and merry Christmas!

Whistle? How loud?

You might want to run the SMART Utilities on it just to check up on it.

If it is a Hitachi Disk, you can also check out Hitachi's Site and Tools

Welcome to the Forums and Merry Christmas B) :D

She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

SMART test passed

Thanks Christopher for the post,
i used some SMART utilities and the results are positifs, no problem detected, the disk is sometimes stoping spining and th noise is off (i suspect the presence of a fan). is there a fan for the HDD, the fan of the motherboard is on the left i think, so it must be only the drive, are the 5200/7200 rpm HDD more noisy than 4200 ?
Thanks for the answer :lol:

Nope; to my knowledge, there is no dedicated fan unit for the HDD, the entier Thinkpad shares that one Main Fan. There is, however, a small vent near it. You can also try getting NHC and attempt acoustic HDD Management; it will help out a tad I should think. :)
