Security Chip

#1 Post by kuma » Wed Dec 21, 2005 3:25 pm

Who should use it and what does it do?
I'm a med student, thinking about activating it. I have the fingerprint reader on my TP. Would like to have the added security if my laptop gets stolen. Is it a good idea?
Thanks.

I'm a lawyer, and I use it on my personal laptop. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I don't like the idea of anybody being able to read my bank statements, insurance policies, estate plans, etc. I find that it slows my bootup a little, but not to the point that it is intolerable.

If you are that concerned; you might as well activiate it. :)

I am involved in Bioengineering and Medical Work; I do indeed appreciate a good way to work with sensitive information. When you activate it, it doesn't really add that much hassle to everyday routine. It is also nice to be able to further encypt files for added security with the swipe of a finger. :)

You have to download the latest CSS (Client Security Software)

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46391

Then you simply follow the procedures for activating it; you probably already have a CSS version on your system. I would, however, recommend updating to the latest version and then activating; it will save you the hassle of activating the older version then having to replace it if you decide to upgrade later. :)

"Creating system keys" is taking forever. Any reason for this?

I had to shut down and restart. But now it works ok.
Not exactly sure what I added though.

If you go to the Control Panel; you will see the IBM Embedded Security Icon. Click that, then start configuring it the way you like it. You can also enable a little tray icon should you want quick access to it. To setup FPR Authenticated Password Retrival, you can hit Ctrl+Shift+G as the default key combo to bring it up. :)
