91 degrees celsius....

#1 Post by Bluecat » Thu Dec 22, 2005 4:02 am

Dear all,

lately I have been just typing some e-mails, nothing out of the ordinary. CHC shows 91 degres constantly (no over, under clocking or volting going on). Will reboot again, but find it a bit strange. Normally only get these temperatures with high usage of CPU, GPU and CDrom.

Also the battery sign of IBM Maximizer keeps disapearing from the system tray.

Any help would be apreciated.

Christmas blessings,

Berent.

Hi,

90 degrees is the throttling down limit for this processors. So first thing to verify is if the temp is real. It should be very easy to verify, since the machine should be *very hot* downunder.

If the temp is not real, then it is either a problem with CHC (I suggest verify with another tool such as mobmeter), or you have a hardware problem. (malfunctioning sensor ?)

If the temp is real, then either you have something wrongly installed (such as the processor without thermal paste), or your fan is broken or something alike ... can you feel the hot air going out by the left side of the TP ?

In any case, as you can see... not very good news..

Indeed; I would be very concerned if NHC read out 90 Degrees Celsius or so. Try feeling around the Thinkpad for very hot areas, particularly underneath the Thinkpad. If it isn't that hot, or you don't feel it getting any hotter when you boot up, it could be that either NHC is reading the values off wrong or that the temperature sensors are malfunctioning as FTC stated. Also, try starting NHC up as a system service and watching the tempseratures from a cold boot. Again, if they go up that would indicate there is a problem with how the system gets cooled. If the first temperature you see is in the 90 Degree range, that would indicate that NHC and/or the temperature sensor is the problem. HTH :)

I have configuration very similar to yours and I also hit mid 90's when gaming (e.g. heavy load on both CPU and GPU). Even at medium load (30-40 %) the temperature reaches 70 C when running at full speed (2133 MHz). BTW, according to what I've been able to find in the litterature the throttling starts at 94 C and shutdown takes place at 99 C.

In your case, though, it could be that you have some process running amok. What does Task Manager report the CPU load to be? And which process hogs the CPU if it's at 100 %?

It may also be related to this fix, though, if you're not using the newest revisions of the BIOS and ECP.
