Stripped Screw :(

#1 Post by aphex » Thu Dec 22, 2005 12:46 pm

Having some wireless issues with my 2200bg (~1/10 the speed of my other wireless computers) Tried new drivers (both intel and ibm, no luck)

Called up IBM and was told they needed the FRU to send me a replacement...

Took out the keyboard screws just fine, however one of the palm rest screws (in the middle right - laptop upsidedown) wouldnt turn and as a result the top is stripped... The more i turn, the more metal comes out of the screw...

Any ideas?

That's tough. But I have had luck with using a straight jewelers screwdriver that just fit the stripped screw. Seemed my philips just tore it up. I also applied pressure on the palm rest (upside down) as I unscrewed it.

Usually IBM will send out the FRU ahead of time with shipping label for the return. Now, you will have to disassemble twice. I would try service again and see if they will do that.

If I understand your post correctly, you stripped out the head of the screw, and the screw is still in the palm rest. If this is the case, get a very small grinding stone, preferably in a Dremel tool, or alternatively in a small electric drill motor. Carefully grind away the head of the screw until you can remove the palm rest. There should (I haven't done this myself) be enough of the screw thread left sticking out of the palmrest, that you can grab it with some small vise-grip pliers and unscrew it. Maybe you can get a replacement screw at a computer repair shop, optical shop, or someplace simular. You can order a screw kit from IBM, but you'll end up spending more money.

There a two ways that you should be able to get the part number without opening the laptop. The first way is: press the blue Access IBM button. Choose Get Help & Support > System information > Warranty & parts. The second way is to go to the following page: Parts lookup and choose "Detect and continue" or else enter the Type and Serial# manually and choose "Continue".
