wireless comes and goes

#1 Post by fjs08 » Mon Jul 12, 2004 8:27 am

Guys,
Still having occasional problems with wireless. The icon in the lower right tray now tells me I have an excellent connection (which it didn't do in my previous note), but I can't link up with the web. But it is intermittent??? My associate has a mac and his doesn't have outages when I'm out. And this happens whether he is connected or not. I can cable the t40 to the router and everything is fine???

btw, it doesn't happen at home, just at the office???
And I take the computer to Panera's too before the office. I don't use their wireless, cause I can't, but that's another story. But the computer sits in my bag in Sleep mode????

Any thoughts,
Thanks,
Frank

its probably an issue with your office's network configuration. maybe you need some authorization, wep, or registered mac address or something. it's not really a t-series problem/issue.

do you think you use enough question marks???????????

First thought is driver or firmware. Make sure both are up to date on the AP and the NIC.

Is the AP doing any sort of encryption? With most higher level (EAP, PEAP, 802.1x) encryption you will make a conneciton to the AP but never be able to go anywhere untill the auth happens.

Hi,

First off, this is a relatively new problem. I've had the t40 for months and this is just now occurring//

Not sure I know what an AP or NIC is???

I did do the suggested IBM upgrades yesterday. I got the e-mail about upgrades. I downloaded them and installed them. Could this be the problem?? I did an antiviral scan yesterday and no problems. Definitions are up to date too.

I have this happen occasionally on my T42. I don't know what causes it, but none of my other laptops experience it. A reboot and AP reset are needed to fix the problem.

I also have a minor issue through IBM Connections where every few minutes the wireless systray icon pops up and says "Connection not available" and within 5 seconds goes back to "Excellent" This can happen in the middle of file transfers and nothing seems to actually drop or get disconnected...but I hate having those status bubbles pop up and obscure Trillian every 3 minutes!

Sorry I don't have a solution that doesn't involve nuking Access Connection's authority over the wifi connection, but I'm glad it's not just me :)

I thought it might be some conflict with the router at the office and my associates iBook Mac that he uses. I waited and tried it after he left, but to no avail. However, since I've been home, NO problems what-so-ever!!! Like it works perfectly. Could it be a problem with the wireless router that I use at the office. At home, I have a linksys cabled router that hooks into a Dell True Mobile wireless router. As soon as I get home, I "wake up" the ThinkPad and it logs on automatically. I've been home 2 hours now and have been on the computer/internet continously without any problem. It could be a coincidence, but I doubt it.
Any thoughts. Thanks.
