selection criteria? btw t40p & r52

#1 Post by caffemusse » Mon Dec 26, 2005 5:34 am

Ciao again and happy holidays :D

I still haven't managed to order my used (with 2yr waranty) t40p 2374-EG0 because of the holidays @ 1400$

In the meantiem I stumbled upon a brand new r52 1846 with a 15'' sxga and 1.86 dothan processor + ati x300 64mb @ 1775$

I must admit that a 15'' sxga is a little more inviting than the smaller 14'' @ the same. The extra weight of 300 grams hardly scares me.

q: will I find that the overall build quality of the components (not chassis) are similar (and as good) btw the two models?

q2: the gaming performance on the r52 would that be as good or better than the t40p?

last q: the noise emission, is that the same btw these two models or could the dothan be more silent than the Banias...?

Hope I posted this the right place...

cheers

Well, if weight isn't and issue. Then I would say it is OK; A 15" SXGA isn't that different over a 14" SXGA, IMO. The only thing that I would be concerned about is the Video Card. You might get a tad better with the T40p, but I think you will find that the r52 will do quite fine with a x300. The build quality should be excellent from both of them, I haven;t heard of an issue with either the T40p or the R52 when it comes to build quailty. I don't know about the noise, but I can say that the R52 might be a tad louder than the T40p. :)

I expect that the X300 on the R52 will show better gaming performance than the FireGL 9000 on the T40p.

I'd go for the R52 in this comparison. As mentioned above, the X300 w/64 meg will do better in games than the 9000 w/64 meg in the t40p. The trump here is that for a relatively small increase in cost you are getting a brand new unit that has a faster cpu with more L2 cache, faster ram and front side bus, xp pro vs 2000 (if that matters to you), etc.

I have an R40 - it's a well built machine (6.5 pounds) - compared to the T23's and A21m's I've used in the past it's not as small (t23 - a21m was bigger and bulkier) or quite as "tight" in feel, but still much better (in my opinion) than the Dell latitude D800 than I have from work (which is pretty much a generic ODM model with a screen printed "DELL" under the display)...

Good luck either way... :)
