Questions on Thnikpads

#1 Post by worldsmart » Mon Dec 26, 2005 11:11 am

I have few questions on thinkpads:-
a)Will I see a big difference between 14.1 and 15" UXGA with flexview (what is flexview anyway, more brightness )
b)I want bluetooth also but if I add it , the whole price jumps up. Can I add it internally later.
c) I will use the latop for web surfing, programming , web design.

a) The difference: 14' non-flexview screens cannot be clearly seen from sidewise. Pros: Clear view to watch a flim by more than one person, clear picture. Cons: In public places, the screen is more visible to the person sitting next to you. 14' screens are good enough for single use.

b) Yes, you can add it later. But, the built-in BT is perfectly configured and connected to an antenna. This is a very good initial setup. To get the same setup, you may have to spend some time/effort.

c) Notebook models with 7200RPM HDDs are mostly available only in thinkpads. This gives you a good performance notebook. You need to install programming/web design tools yourself. You don't get special editors/IDE free of cost initially.

Is the flexview kind of glossy screen , I am not going to watch movie with anyone. I was just wondering if it was worth paying extra for 15" vs 14.1 if there is not that much difference.

Does anyone has 15" and 14.1 both

If you want Bluetooth but may add it yourself later, ensure you get a model for which it is optional. That means that the antenna is installed in the lid, the wire leads are there, all you need to do is replace the modem card for a modem/bluetooth card. Search the forum for "tabook.pdf" and you'll find a link to the document which provide all the information that you need.

Frankly, it's easier to just buy one with the options installed, than trying to find the parts after-market. RAM is the only thing I'd recommend buying separately.
2668-75U T43, 2GB RAM, 2nd hand NMB kybd, Dock II, spare Mini-Dock, and spare Port Replicators. Wacom BT tablet. Ultrabay 2nd HDD.
2672-KBU X32, 1.5GB RAM, 7200 rpm TravelStar HDD.

No lookes like its much easier to buy with already buit in. what about the screen difference between 15 and 14.1. I never saw flexview so dont know if its worth the extra $$.

Can the hd be added later or thats also better to get it when the laptop is bought.

Other than RAM and mini-pci cards I think the hard drive is probably the next easiest item to upgrade (particularly if you get the ultra bay second hard disk drive adapter - a great buy for ~$40)...

1- I find the advantage to Flexview is in VERTICAL clarity not horizontal as another poster said. The position of my screen is not as important based on how upright I am sitting (I'm not always having to adjust the screen back and forth as I fidgit). Brightness is a bit better, and colors are a bit crisper. Is it worth the extra money to have this slight improvement and have to carry around the extra weight of a 15" model... that's your call.

2- On many models Bluetooth can easily be added later. Find out if the model you are interested in already has a Bluetooth antenna installed. Many do. If not it's not the end of the world as I've had a lot of success installing the antenna in places other than the lcd. I don't get 100 meters distance but who the heck needs that anyway?

3- If you find your model adds too much for a hard drive upgrade then buy it with the cheapest hard drive and install the one you want separately. Use the hard drive you bought with the laptop as a backup drive or and external.

Yes, that's true. Horizontal there's hardly any difference - the regular screens may distort colors a bit from large horizontal angles, but everything is still perfectly visible. Vertical angles are a different story.

I am getting this model 2668BJU, I looked at the link for the manual it doesn't tell me if this model already has antenna built in.

Does anyone added bluetooth to this model ??

2668-BJU doesn't show up in my copies of TABOOK.PDF (sept, nov, dec), so you'd have to ask a salesperson.

Its not the end of the world if you don't either...its just an extra $12 and 4 more screws to undo.

But if its offered as an option as you said it was, then yeah, it probably has the antenna already. :P
