Failing motherboards due to laptop flex?

#1 Post by roberts5 » Tue Dec 27, 2005 1:19 pm

I had a seperate post (Here) about video chip and motherboard failure and the frequency of this issue. smadnell pointed out that this was most likely due to the mother board flexing when picking it up by the corner:
As far as I can tell, it's caused by repeated flexing of the motherboard as users hold the entire laptop from a corner of the palmrest (like you would when passing an empty plate during a meal).
I just wanted to point this out and see what your take on this was. I know that from now on I will NOT be picking up my thinkpad from the corner.

Note from Moderator: Now, see, you even admit there is already an existing thread, and you posted a new one anyway. Please read the posting guidelines, and adhere to them.

Well, it all depends on the Thinkpad baing held. Sometimes, there may be certain issues preceeding the motherboard failure that are made worse by holding it with one hand asymmetrically. I, personally, never hold my Thinkpad with one hand from a corner; I don't even lift it with one hand or even try to tilt it like that. However, I do think it is sturdy enough to handle small periods of time where it is used like that. Heck, you can even lift it up by its screen (*shudder*) though I strongly recommend against that. The reason will differ subtly, but perhaps significantly in some unforeseen way, from machine to machine. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

I have heard some of my friends talk about this issue, it certainly is plausable, circuit boards are somewhat brittle and flexing them can cause solder joints to crack, not an overall good thing.

I already have this problem in my T40, so from now on I can *only* pick it up by two hands holding it around the LCD hinges, otherwise I have a great deal of issues. :(
