Keyboard flex

#1 Post by smakdown61 » Mon Jul 12, 2004 8:51 pm

The keys feel a little sticky and the right side has ALOT of flex. I mean when using the arrow keys (whicn by the way feel VERY BAD) the whole right side goes down at least like 3mm, very noticable. But besides the keyboard this is a very good laptop. If anyone has a cheap fix for the keyboard, besides calling IBM for a replacement, let me know.

I guess judging by your screen comments, you have a 14" model?
You can reduce most of the flex on the right by adding thin strips of tape on top of the tape that's already there from the factory. Remove the KB, and you will see it on the right side, on top of the casing that holds the optical drive.

I have the same T42P (arrived 3 weeks ago) and experienced exactly the same right side keyboard issue. I used double sticky tapes glue down 2-3 business cards and cut it into small pieces and stripes. Placed some underneath the arrow keys and along the right side of the keyboard. Be careful not to block the holes of the keypads. The keyboard is now very solid. With no dead pixels, this notebook rocks.

I have the same system, as well, but I cannot understand this whole keyboard issue....maybe I'm just too accepting? I have been using it for about 2 weeks now, and I don't really notice any kind of flex on either side. Sure, if I were to press down hard on some of the arrow keys the board will slightly flex down, but does this hamper typing? not in the least bit. Maybe I'm not as picky as you guys, but I just wonder is there something here I'm missing, or do I have a fault-free system? It's hard to get a feel for what someone else considers "flex" , it could be another person's "normal".

The only thing I have noticed is the battery is a bit loose, and I looked up the FRU and it is indeed a Sanyo model. However, until this impacts my work or damages something on the system, I feel theres no need to try to get it replaced.

I have the same issue on my T42.
:?: Is this fix easy to do. I am a bit reluctant to take my baby apart. Any instructions? Photos?

I finally understand the issue you guys speak of. I played with a T40 today. This is not a hard problem to resolve. Remove the keyboard and like others have said, secure a few business cards underneath and it should all be good.
