What would make sense to upgrade on this machine?

#1 Post by Teerex » Fri Dec 30, 2005 12:05 pm

I'll be working with MS Office. If the machine will allow me, I'll be playing CS:S - will that work?

What should I upgrade on this machine before I get it in?

Thanks

Aside from more RAM (1/2 GB is sufficient for Office and the OS, but 1 GB would be nicer), just accessories, imho.

If you DO get RAM, splurge for a 1 GB DIMM, then if you want to get more later, instead of dumping two DIMMs, you only need discard one.

I would recommend an extra AC adapter. A backup software solution (Thinkpads come with a sort of backup program, but others like Norton Ghost, GoBack, Acronis, or some full-fledged disc backup program). Good, strong third-party firewall application to harden your security (presuming your TP only comes with Norton AV). An external mouse that you really like. A Targus Traveler CoolPad. And a good bag to carry it in, one that is NOT an obvious "computer bag" (I like the Patagonia's Vertical Mass and One Bag).

I have a "So you want to..." list at Amazon which lists all these and more.

Happy computing!

I'd bump it up to a gig of memory, one sticks or two, just get a gig, though Office would run comfortably in 512, Source will eat up the memory.

I've played source on the X300, and got 30 frames with moderate settings. Not bad.
First Laptop: IBM ThinkPad iSeries 1411 (2611-411) (Underpowered from day one)
Next Laptop: HP Pavilion ze5300 (Poorly Cooled)
This laptop: IBM ThinkPad T43 (2686-NAU) (PERFECT.)
