Windows XP EXTREMELY SLOW bootup after *software update*

#1 Post by chefwong » Fri Dec 30, 2005 8:26 pm

After running the lenovo software update *drivers/apps* my boot up time currently takes anywhere from 7-9 minutes. I do no have the slightest clue what would be causing this on my T43 unit....

Any help or advice on where to start would be greatly appreciated

Well, you could try using Bootvis to see what processes are starting up and how many you can excise; also, try try typing in "msconfig" in the Run dialog box to get to the *.ini files and see what is coming up during boot that way. The files should be SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, and BOOT.INI. Those should give you a good idea and a list of what is coming up and bootvis can tell you *when* they are coming up. HTH :)

My first guess would be that it has something to do with your wireless adapter. Try this experiment; Go to Network Connections, right-click on your wireless adapter and choose Disable. Now reboot and see how long it takes.

I haven't had any combination of updates, application or wireless cause that kind of delay on any laptop or desktop computer until recently. I have one desktop for a client that is taking 5 or 6 minutes to start, and that occured after I installed Norton Internet Security 2006. The machine is fine once running. It appears to be the new Norton Protection Center. Are you running this? When I get back to the client in the new year, I will try to disable it.

I remember a while ago when I was running Win2k there was an update that made windows try to load a driver in an infinite loop. Search support.microsoft.com to see if there's anything similar to your problem. It might tell you which update to uninstall.
