Hi! i have a T43 2686. I am using "mobilemonitor" to monitor cpu temp and harddrive temps.
Ive been playing lots of Unreal Tournament 2k4 on my Thinkpad. It runs the game well, but it brings the Laptop temp jup to 65 C while playing. thats roughly 140 F!!!
is it okay to run it that hot for that long? The fan is on though!
That doesnt account as abuse or void my warrrenty right?
ALso! What kind of temps do you guys get during daily use? Like browsing and office?

Before I undervolted the CPU using Notebook Hardware Control my notebook would reach the 90's C while gaming. This made me pretty uncomfortable, though.
Now, I've undervolted the CPU and manage the speed more accurately to my needs so I can game at much lower temps (50-75 C depending on the game).
Idle/office temps are also down from about 45-60 C to 37-45 C.
I'm a bit suspicious, though, if my cooling solution is adequate or as good it can be and I'm becoming increasingly motivated to the notion of popping the hood and checking the state of the thermal paste and maybe replace it with some Arctic Silver 5.

Hi,
Dont' worry at all. 65C is a very safe temp for this thinkpads. Note that the first T40's could easily get to 80-82C under load, and the processor shutwdown temp is 100C (w/90C being its throttling temp).
I have a T42 and a T40, both folding 24x7 (when I'm not using them) since 1 year ago, and they behave perfectly. I am undervolting them a bit and used some thermal paste to reduce their temps, but even in this case the T40 is constantly above 70C and the T42 is at around 60C.
The only problem you may face is with the fan wearing out a bit, but in that case they begin being louder, and you need about 10000 hours or more of usage to start noticing it...
