Username issue...

#1 Post by Ivawart » Sat Dec 31, 2005 1:03 pm

Hi,

I've just bought a used T43 with power supply only (no manuals). All the software has already been installed, including Windows XP. The machine is working fine except for the finger print reader (fpr).

The problem is that the original user has set up the computer under the name "user" and when I try to set up the fpr the username being desplayed is "user" and it cannot be changed. I have changed the windows username to my own but this has not helped. Is there anything that can be done to change the username?

:(

Probably better to simply "disenroll" the previous user.
  1. However you logon, make sure your logged on user is a member of the local ADMINISTRATORS group. Make the password for the user Administrator something that you like. Write that password down. Change the password for this "user" login to a password.
  2. Open up the Thinkvantage Fingerprint Software, and "Delete passport and fingerprints."
  3. Clean out the IE cache, temporary files, etc. (The Disk Cleanup Wizard is great for this.)
  4. Logout of this user. Login as Administrator.
  5. Create anew your own user that you'll use going forward.
  6. Login as your own user.
  7. NOW enroll your own fingerprints.
  8. If you want to use power-on password, ensure you pick your fingerprint "passport" to replace the power-on password, otherwise I believe BIOS will be looking for the old one (though I think when you delete passport and fingerprints from one user, it removes that).
  9. Reboot. Try logging in as your new user. Results ...?
Need help with any of this, take some time to read the Windows Help, and the Access IBM software is also full of some very extensive help and background information.

Adding upon the previous suggestions,

1. Go to control pannel >> system >> computer name >> change >> and change the computer name to the one you like.

2. create a new account with administrator privilage. Log off and log in as the newly created user

3. go to control pannel >> administrative tools >> local users >> users and delete the user you want deleted. BEWARE: you will loose all personalised information available in my-documents and documents and settings. you may want to copy the files you want to somewhere else for the time being.

4. Open finger print reader control center and try doing the needfull. If not working as desired, try deleting the fingerprints and if that fails try going to add-remove programms and un-install the fingerprint software. Download and install it again.

By now I figure you would have solved the issue.

I believe that XP will ask if you want to "remove files" as well, and that determines if the profile data is wiped. Regardless, I like to make a Zip of the old user profile stuff after clearing out IE temp files, etc.
