T43 (2687-DSU) Won't Hibernate by Itself

#1 Post by safelder » Mon Jan 02, 2006 9:10 pm

As the topic says. I can hibernate (or standby) my machine using the Fn hotkeys just fine. However, if I leave it idle, it won't hibernate or standby according to the timings set in power manager. I've tried turning off all the wireless functions and closing all my programs, thinking that something was running a process, but that didn't help. Neither did removing and reinstalling the Power Manager and Power Management Driver. BIOS and EC are up-to-date.

Thoughts?

I...Uhhhh...Hmmmmm

Unless this is some low-level problem; the only thing I can think of is a Process that is holding it up. This happens to Suspend too, or is it just Hibernate? :?

You could try running System File Checker in Windows. Type SFC in the text box under: ? Help and Support off of the Start button. You will find instructions in Windows help for using it.

Battery Maximizer, ThinkPad Power Management driver, ThinkPad Configuration, Presentation Manager, EasyEject Utility, and the Display driver all have hooks into power management I believe.

If you have the ATI graphics adapter, PowerPlay is a power management setting that can be changed in display properties.

When you say: "However, if I leave it idle, it won't hibernate or standby according to the timings set in power manager." Are you talking about "Power Options" in Windows "Control Panel"?

It appears to happen to suspend, too (though I don't have a suspend timeout configured on AC power).

I am referring to timings set in the IBM Power Manager application (though they seem to be reflected in the Windows Power .cpl).

I did notice that before I unistalled the software, I had a scheduled task PMTask that was set to run when idle, but had never run. It disappeared when I uninstalled, and then reappeared with the reinstall...but now it runs.

I don't think I run Battery Maximizer, and I know I don't run EasyEject utility (disabled in msconfig, but available with Fn hotkey). TP Configuration and Presentation Manager are installed, but I don't think they're running. I do have an ATI adapter.

I don't know if it will make any difference or not, but you might try enabling EasyEject Utility for an experiment.

If you have anything scheduled to run when the computer is idle, that may be causing your problem. Away Manager is one program that has this feature. Check in Scheduled Tasks (in Control Panel) for these types of programs.

The only thing in Scheduled Tasks is PMTask, which appears to be related to either the IBM Power Manager app or the power management driver (it disappeared when I uninstalled the two).

The more I think about this, the less I think it's a big deal.

And the answer is...

...PowerPlay!

Through experimentation, I discovered that ATI PowerPlay is the offender here. Thanks for the suggestion, GomJabbar.

Failure to suspend

#9 Post by schen » Wed Feb 15, 2006 2:47 pm

Hopefully I can revive this thread or at least get somebody to PM me back, but I have a problem on my wife's A30 that sounds like it might be related to the problem in this thread. Her A30 has the ATI video card, and absolutely refuses to suspend/sleep or anything like that on it's own. I've installed and reinstalled APM to no avail. The strange thing about this machine is that it also won't let me do a load of the ATI Radeon Mobility driver. It fails regardless of whether I try to load it via IBM/Lenovo Software Installer or Manually installing. Hopefully somebody has some ideas although this really isn't about a T4x.
