need recommendations

#1 Post by neozengar » Mon Jan 02, 2006 10:23 pm

hi guys!

i cant decide between two these thinkpads:

t41p
Pentium M 735 1.7GHz
1GB RAM
60GB 7200rpm HDD
14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD
128MB FireGL T2
16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD(slim)
802.11b Wireless(MPCI)
Bluetooth/Modem(CDC)
1GB Ethernet(LOM)
Secure Chip
UltraNav
9 cell Li-Ion battery
WinXP Pro

t42
Pentium M 735 1.7GHz
1024MB RAM (1GB)
40GB 5400rpm HDD
14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD
64MB ATI Radeon 9600
24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD
Intel 802.11b/g wireless(MPCI)
Modem(CDC)
1Gb Ethernet(LOM)
UltraNav
Secure Chip
Fingerprint Reader
6 cell Li-Ion battery
Windows XP Professional

besides the model, the t41p obviously has better configuration, w/o fingerprint reader. the price is pretty simliar too. should i go for the t41p instead? any suggustions?

thx in advance!!!

If the price are same, go for the t41p. t41p has much better video card (more ram, too) and finger print reader is pretty much useless IMO. Make sure your warranty info first (3 or 1 year). I believe that t41p has 3 years and t42 that you described has 1 year.

my 2 cents

In this case, I would go for the T41p

A Fingerprint Reader, however, is not useless; I don't think that the OP will use it much. But it is *very* useful if you are dealing with important files that need to be kept secure with a 16+ Character Password. :D

Ask yourself a few questions. What do YOU need your laptop to do? What are your uses for this laptop? What warranty is remaining on each? Will you be having to enter long or frequent passwords? Is HDD access important with the software you will use? Is Bluetooth a necessity? Will you travel enough where a/c isn't handy so that carrying the extra weight of a 9-cell is worthy?

Here's the way I'd look at it. First, what things does one offer over the other that can't be added, or easily added, but you really need? Video card. Then the built-in FR for instance. Bluetooth can be added internally but how much surgery will you be comfortable with? You can have external Bluetooth or a FR via USB. Wireless can be fairly easily upgraded internally (do you need G?). Hard drive is easy. Battery is easiest. Next take what the cost would be to configure each using the answers you gave from my questions up above.

The T41p looks good on paper, but what if you have to use this on the road where weight is a factor, you need the speed of 802.11G, and you have to enter numerous or frequent passwords? Add to this the remaining warranty and mayber the T42 is the better one for YOU. Only you can answer this so start asking yourself the important questions.

Good Luck,
Yak

I'd suggest the T41p here as well. Only the lack of WiFi-G is somewhat bothering, but that shouldn't be noticeable for surfing the web, only for transferring files across LAN (in which case you can just use the Wired LAN or get a PCMCIA/USB WiFi-G adapter). Everything else is the same or better on the T41p.

Noise, size and weight shouldn't be a problem. The 9-cell battery will stick out a bit and will be heavier, but not by a lot.
