Swapping out harddisks in a T42, difficult?

#1 Post by ndee » Tue Jul 13, 2004 4:31 am

I'm interessted in the UC26ZSG (Swiss Modell) but I would like to replace the harddisk with a 60GB, 7200rpm one. Is it hard to replace a harddisk in a T42?

Thanks for any information.

Not at all. There is software that will copy everything from you current hard drive to your new one.

What's the name of that software?

I'm wondering cuz I will be getting the T42 with the 40GB(5400rpm) and would like to upgrade it to the 60GB(7200rpm) harddisk. Could I still use the Rapid Restore feature from IBM?

There are many:
Symantec Ghost, PowerQuest DriveImage, Acronis TrueImage, Ontrack DiskGo,... and many other.

The rapid restore you will be also able to save, but get the disks from IBM or burn it yourself just in case.

This is what I would do:
-Obtain rescue disks from IBM or burn it yourself.
-Make an image of the two partitions into CDs or better yet another PC in a network with any of the software mentioned. (I don't remember if they can see the hidden partition, but they should).
-Install new HDD
-Put the imaes on this new HDD.
(The rescue CDs come handly, if those software were not able to make a good image of the hissen partition)
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)
