Just got my T40 laptop! Please help me get over few problems

#1 Post by bigben20 » Wed Jan 04, 2006 9:06 am

Hello Folks,

This is my first post here but I been around since last year or so.

I just bought a T40 used in good condition for a grand total of $530.
Pentium m processor 1.5GHZ
60 GB Hard Drive
1 GB RAM
CDRW/DVD-ROM
Cisco internal wireless
port replicator
Warranty until 11/06

I installed Windows XP without any problems at all. Then I tried to install all the software for the laptop that the previous guy provided on a CD. I tried to install the software for the trackpoint & touchpad without any luck. Now I can use an external mouse but I can't make the mouse or trackpoint device on T40 work. I installed 77gu04ww.exe from IBM website but still nothing happens. Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong.

Any feedback appreciated.

great deal on that laptop, as long as everything is working.

You may want to remove the keyboard and reseat the connector. Their are four screws on the bottom that have a keyboard symbol next to them, those are the ones that you remove. Than it just comes out.

Download software installer and use that to install all the software, it makes the process simple and painless. Good luck. Here is the link to the software installer.

Boot up into the BIOS and make sure that the TrackPoint and TouchPad are not set to disabled. You can also do this with ThinkPad Configuration in Windows, although it will require a reboot.

Note, if you download 77gu04ww.exe from IBM and then double-click on it to execute it, it will place the files in the appropriate directories, but it still does not install the software. You have to go to the directory where the files were installed and double-click on Setup.exe to execute it and install the software (and hardware). This is true on any software files you download from IBM's site. You need to watch where the files are placed to see where to go for Setup.exe. For the UltraNav driver look in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\UNAV\ . As mentioned by jongordo8, you can use Software Installer to install these things, and it will save you the steps I just mentioned.

I am just adding on the valuable suggestions provided my the above users by putting them in a step by step action list.

1. First thing is to install Software Installer. Update all the drivers via Software Installer.
2. You may then have an application called "Thinkpad Configuration" wherin you can Disable/Enable any device of your PC including TrackPoint or TouchPad.
3. If the device does not apear in the software, then shut down the system, keep the F1 key depressed and start the system to go into the BIOS. Make sure all devices you want are enabled there.

By this time the issue would have pretty much solved itself.

Alright I got installer and let it do all the work. After few hours, I got the trackpoint running like a charm :D and I am absolutely in love with this trackpoint.

However, I still like to have touchpad & thats the only thing not working for me right now. Can anyone tell if I should install ultranav to make this touchpad work or is it something else?
Thanks again to everyone.

Btw, I bought this laptop over at Anandtech.

There are (2) different drivers available on IBM's site. One is for the TrackPoint only, and the other is the UltraNav driver that is for the TrackPoint and TouchPad. You do not use the TrackPoint only driver if you want both the TrackPoint and Touchpad to work.

Congrats on the T40, I love mine.

The other posts were right on with how to ensure the touchpad is working.

Enable in BIOS
Install correct IBM driver (mine shows ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device in Windows Device Manager)

I'd re-check the BIOS and device manager settings. The ThinkPad Configuration utility will show the TouchPad status and let you enable it, if disabled.

The only other things that I can think of are 1) the touchpad connector is disconnected. This is possible because the palmrests on the T4x series break on a regular occasion near the hard drive. IBM replaces them for free, but you do have to disconnect and reconnect the touchpad cable. And 2), the other option is the touchpad is somehow broken. If this is the case, since you're under warranty, call IBM and have them fix it.

Good luck.

Good deal on the laptop..

If the touch pad is broken, just call IBM service and they will send out a new wrist rest with the touch pad installed because this is a user replace waranty item. It is not a difficult item to replace, you will need to remove 6 screws, unplug the cable and replace. Make sure you send back the old one or they will charge you for it.

I just replaced one on a T41, took all of 5 minutes.

Alright I got into the Bios.
Configure > Keyboard/mouse > 2 options (1) Trackpoint- automatic/disabled. I set it on automatic since there is no enable option.
Hit F10 save changes and exit. Install the ultrnav point device driver. Reboot.
Still nothing working.

I checked Thinkpad configuration utility and for seem reason Touchpad appears disabled. I tried Ultranav wizard it also please enable touchapad from Bios or from Thinkpad configuration. And I already checked Bios but I can't find the Touch pad anywhere. I am starting to think maybe I need to go ahead and call IBM to get it fixed.

I also got some error
IRQL Not Equal OR LESS like 7 times in a row. But after that everything seems to work fine since last 2 hours.

Sounds like you may have an IRQ conflict, some other device is stealing the IRQ for the trackpoint, or someone pulled out the keyboard and did not properly reconnect the track point. I did that once on an Iseries, tore the cable in half  my boss was p - o'd.
