Bluetooth Won't Work

#1 Post by ghp542 » Sat Jan 07, 2006 7:26 am

I have been unable for the past few months to get the Bluetooth on my T42P to work properly. When I turn it on, I get an error message of USB device unknown.

I have tried uninstalling the IBM Bluetooth II and using the window xp sp2 drivers with no luck. I have tried updated the window drivers with the IBM Bluetooth III drivers, but when I do this, the update says there are no compatable drivers.

I have briefly looked in the forums to see if anybody else has had this problem and haven't seen anything like this.

TIA

Have you read through the recent Bluetooth threads and followed those instructions for installing the IBM BT driver and software? It's not exactly plug and play.... Look particularly for any that I've posted in, as I posted detailed steps that I took completely uninstalling and reinstalling the IBM software and pairing an audio headset device.

I had the same problem and just posted on it yesterday.

I was trying without success to install the IBM Bluetooth II drivers on my T42p by just clicking on the executable file downloaded from IBM but it would never show up. There are 23 specific steps to loading the drivers on the IBM web site, print them and follow them carefully.

What ended up working for me was installing the drivers through the IBM Thinkpad Software Installer. Go to Access IBM/Thinkpad Software Installer in your start menu and try opening the drivers and installing them that way. Then carefully follow the rest of the 23 steps on the IBM driver web site, including the last steps which are necessary to avoid conflicts between the drivers and Win XP SP2.

Now it is working perfectly for me.

Testimonials rock. :) I think my note on the Bluetooth audio thread explored actually UNinstalling the IBM drivers/software (it's all-in-one), then installing again. Glad to hear that you got it going without too much head-banging. Proof that it CAN be done.

Still Problems

#5 Post by ghp542 » Sat Jan 07, 2006 2:21 pm

I have followed to the letter the directions on the IBM site for installing the Bluetooth II driver. I cannot get it to show in the device managaer and it is still giving me the USB device not recognized message?

Any other ideas?

yes, try installing it through the thinkpad software installer as I suggested above and then follow all the rest of the steps.

Sure sounds like the card is on the fritz. Sending it in for repair sounds reasonable.

Bluetooth now working

#11 Post by ghp542 » Mon Jan 16, 2006 6:55 pm

Just got the T42 back from IBM and the modem/bluetooth board was replaced. Seems to be working now.

Now I have another question. How come I have two bluetooth symbols in my system tray? I have one with a red center and one that is a lighter blue.

Just wondering?

Hmmm, sounds like you have both the IBM Bluetooth Drivers installed as well as the Microsoft ones.....On other systems with Bluetooth, I have had less trouble with the 3rd Party Drivers and not the Microsoft ones.

Bluetooth drivers

#13 Post by ghp542 » Mon Jan 16, 2006 9:59 pm

I have two bluetooth devices listed under device manager. One is named IBM intergrated Bluetooth III and the other is Micorsoft Bluetooth Enumerator.

Do I need both of them?

Nope. If one is blue 'n red, and the other is blue 'n white, open the options for the blue 'n red one and disable "show icon on taskbar."

BT problems

Well .. Now its time to walk through the twenty-something steps again ...

Good ... You have probably taken them a few times before without any luck due to faulty board - This time you should get more success

The 23 steps

#16 Post by ghp542 » Wed Jan 18, 2006 7:14 pm

Well, I did the 23 step process and now I have only one bluetooth symbol. I t seems strange to me that IBW would send it back to me this way.
