Updating Embedded Controller to 1.04 hangs

#1 Post by sunew » Sat Jan 07, 2006 7:38 pm

Hi all,
I'm trying to upgrade the Embedded Controller program from 1.03 to 1.04 on my t43p 2668. But after rebooting, when i'm taken to the bios like screen, the updating process hangs when showing the message "looking for Embedded Controller program..." (something like that ;) ) I tried keeping it there for hours, but nothing happens. Luckily can reboot the machine without problems.

I updated the bios to 1.24 prior to trying to upgrade the EC.

anybody experience the same problem ?

regards, sune w

I do know that there is an order in which you have to install them and they are version-paired. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Yes, followed the instructions.

It is stated very clearly that the bios should be upgraded before the EC. It also says:
"This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 1.00b (or higher)."
The bios version i tried with is 1.24.

I got a bit suspicious when the EC update program had version number 1.23, (on the windows dialog) and the BIOS update program version 1.24, so I tried downgrading the bios to 1.23 and running the EC upgrade again. But the EC upgrade still hangs.

Anybody got a clue?

1. Try closing all the programs possible in the System Tray first [taskbar notification area] (right-click and choose close). Then run the install.

2. Delete your copy of the update, then download again and try with a fresh copy.

3. Try the unattended install option listed on the link above.

4. Check for error messages in Event Viewer at the time of the update.

5. Try installing from Windows Safe Mode.

6. Download the diskette version and install from a floppy.

I had the same problem with my T42 for a while.

The support guy I talked to, said that SP2 made it behave this way (on some machines).

I tried a number of different routes (as suggested by GomJabbar), but none worked.

In the end, the only fix was to install the diskette version... (so if you haven't got a diskette drive, there is no quick fix)

By the way, in my experience, the install order is not relevant to this problem - the issue is specifically with the EC update program.
