T43 noise : fan or hard drive?

#1 Post by vincentfox » Mon Jan 09, 2006 3:04 am

Work with a T43 that seems to be about 6 months old and have a noise problem. However it seems to be coming from upper-right of main body and be pretty constant. Thinking this may be a noisy hard-drive, and not the fan? I do hear what sounds like a fan spin up sometimes but that seems to be centered more on the center-left side of the body.

Upper-right part of the body? That would be near the Optical Drive; some people have reported a little noise that comes from there, but the situations under which it happens are very varied. I can hear it if I get close to it whilst it is playing a DVD; other than that though, i haven't heard anything coming from there. Does this happen all the time or only under a specific circumstance?

Actually now that I get my ear close and move around a bit, it looks more like lower-right. So that would be the hard-drive which has become noisy with time, right? Only 6 months old! I guess I will try Lenovo and see if they will replace the drive. I am kind of skeptical that they will accept "noisy" as a reason for replacement if it passes DFT.

This combined with the fan noise don't make me terribly happy with the T43 at the moment.

My used X22 refitted with a Samsung 40-gig drive is a lot quieter!

Before asking IBM/Lenovo; run the SMART utilities on it and the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test if it is a Hitachi drive. The drive *shouldn't* get noisey after 6 months. I have had my T43 for 6 months and it is still running fine; fan is nowhere near irritating and the HDD is fine. Run those utilities on the HDD and see what happens. HTH :)

Thanks for the help folks!

After reading some threads, I found the power-management stuff I needed to make the fan quiet down more. Now it's quiet enough that I can really hear the grinding of the hard-drive.

Unfortunately, PC-Doctor both short and long tests say drive is A-OK.

So I guess I'll have to see if the service center buys my story that the drive is noisy enough to deserve replacement....
