What kit do you recommend for a 2 PC 11g network behind ADSL

#1 Post by teepee » Tue Jan 10, 2006 1:51 pm

Hi

I have a T42 with 802.11b/g and will be connecting to the internet through a Draytek Vigor 2600 ADSL modem router. As the Vigor 2600 does not inlcude Wi-Fi I'm interested in buying some kit to go behind it to provide 11g access. The T42 is the only machine I will want to access wirelessly.

One plus point of the Vigor 2600, that I assume is of use here, is that (as far as I am aware) it offers a way of passing straight through to a web server, wireless router, or other device.

I can't see what the point would be in buying a Wi-Fi router with built-in ADSL modem and sticking this behind the Vigor. In that case, I might as well just get rid of the Vigor. So, is there a 11g router only (no modem) that anyone could recommend please?

Alternatively, I am thinking of using an old PC as a web server. As far as I am aware XP Pro allows a wi-fi network of 2 machines to be set up using the machines themselves alone. So it seems I could locate the old PC as the main connection to the Vigor, add an 11g card to it, and then use it as the access point for my T42, as well as a web server.

Has anyone tried either apporach, and/or have any thoughts on which would be superior, and/or have any recommendation on the kit to use (in the case of 11g'ing my older PC, which 11g PCMCIA/CardBus/USB adapter to fit that would work well with the T42 11b/g card) please?

I appreciate any and all advice :D .

Thanks in advance!

If you're happy with the Draytek gear you could look at the Vigor 2900G or 2900VG (with VOIP).

If you did want to replace your existing router you could look at the 2800G. VOIP version to be released soon (2800VG).

I have read good things about the Draytek equipment although I have not used them myself.

Cheers,
Rob.

OK, thx Rob. Will look into that. Of course, I suppose I could just get a 2800 to have an all-in-one solution if going that route.

You can also get a Netopia 3387W Enterprised Router. They make a "b" Wi-Fi router without modem (I use the 3387W Ent). I think they make a "g" router in the same line. ... JD Hurst

If I understand your question correctly, you could just go with any run of the mill wireless g router and pc card. Just make sure they are wireless certified, and you should have no problems.

Just be cautious. There are a number of run-of-the-mill wireless routers that perform poorly. Pick a wireless router for yourself, search here and on Google, and see what others think. ... JD Hurst

You can get a Linksys wrt54g for around 20 bucks after rebates.
probably one the most ompatable wireless routers and can handle 3rd party firmware to turn it into a $1000.00 plus feature unit. Have used them exclusively for a couple of years without issues. Just keep your modem as a modem only. Networks without routers can be a pain and wifi ing 2 machines together results in much less tranfer speed than cat5
Only wifi if you have to.
