Upgrade processor in T42

#1 Post by ttan98 » Thu Jan 12, 2006 11:41 pm

I believe we can upgrade the CPU in T42, normally T42 comes with a 735 processor operating at 1.7G. I wonder whether we can upgrade to a 765 model sometimes in future. this processor has a 478 socket with 400Mhz internal clock.

Is this possible? thanks..

As the duo core processor becomes available in larger quantities the prices of single core CPUs particular the P-Mobile will drop.

Note a 1.2G P III now costs less than $50 in the ebay market. The P-Molie maynot drop that low, but may drop to less than $100-$150 within 12-18 months.

I can wait.

Yes, I put a Pentium M 765 in my T42 in december, and it has been working without any problem. As I understand, Intel stopped the production of this CPU, among others. So, it seems that this CPU is becoming rare in shops.

I suspect the used market will be increasing as off-lease systems containing them start flooding the market more and resellers strip out broken/non-working systems. That's when they'll become more affordable.

How much you pay for 765 processor 3to4? where do you get it from, and how does it perform, a big change in perform?

Hi, I paid approx. 360 euros in a shop. I could have paid cheaper on eBay, but I prefered buying in a shop. As for the performances, as I upgraded from 745, I don't see much difference in normal use, but when I do divX encoding, I can finish the job in a shorter time, maybe by 15 or 20%.

Can you give me the precise Intel model no?

Will a BXM80536GC2000F fit in a T42?

Well, I bought it on the basis of S-Spec, which is SL7V3.
I asked questions about different socket types in the shop, and they told me that any way this is the only Pentium M 765 normally available for sale in shops. (Please correct me if I am wrong.)

Yes, it will fit. It is a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium-M 755 and the sSpec code is SL7EM.

upgrade

#12 Post by ttan98 » Sun Jan 15, 2006 3:49 pm

This follows my comment is another thread, which is

"Looks like Bania can be updated to Dothan. Good news....

Just wait for 12-24 months 755 and 765 P Mobile CPU(both 400fsb) will be available at a very good prices because duo core CPU will be available in large quantities. Then one can upgrade 1.5/1.6G from T4X to 2.0/2.1G CPU relatively easily and cheaply and most importantly performance enhancement. Unless one is itchy to buy a new laptop!!!

currently 755 model is available from ebay at about US$200-$350... in 12 months price will drop to about $150-200"

This is a viable cheap option.

As the processor generation is just shifting, waiting for 12-24 months is bound to be the cheaper option -- but then again, it's the same with most things when dealing with computers. Personally I felt that upgrading right now and spending those 12 months actually working with a smoother system was the more comfortable and efficient way to go.

Considering the rapid progress of computers in general, in the end you pay for the time you're working with a certain kind of system. If the price of a given upgrade drops 100-150 dollars in one year, inversely it can be thought of as the additional price of using a faster system during that whole year. Indeed, depending on whether you really benefit from the said upgrade or not, if you think of it as the added price tag of one full year's smoother computing, $100-$150 suddenly doesn't seem to be that much.

For example, in my case, I gladly "lost" some money in order to have some additional native DSP headroom when doing mobile audio mixing this year.

As I noted in the other thread, the T4x processor upgrade is quite easy to perform (mainly thanks to the great information here!), so if you're going for it, just remember to upgrade the BIOS and the Embedded Controller software before you replace the CPU, and remember to apply thermal paste appropriately, just like people here have advised.

I feel the same way, and anyway buying a cpu is much cheaper than buying a T42p, for instance. (I mean buying a cpu saves me from buying a T42p.)

And, it will probably be time to buy a new computer in 12/24 months.
