Problem connecting 2 USB hard drives to my T42

#1 Post by michaelj » Fri Jan 13, 2006 12:37 am

Has anyone else had a problem connecting 2 USB hard drives to their T42?

I noticed this when I had to move data from one external drive to another-both were connected to the 2 USB ports on my TP.

One was seen by the OS, the other produced an error message saying that a USB device was unrecognized.
The second drive that produced the error was USB powered whereas the already connected drive had a separate AC.

had the same problem connecting an iPod with an external drive already connected. After several attempts, I put the iPod in first-then connected the powered Ext HDD and they were both seen by the O/S.

Perhaps the USB cannot supply sufficient power to 2 HDDs?

had the same problem with asus laptop if you plug both of them while laptop is on it would only recognize one (which was connected first)
so i learned to trick it by pluging both of them and then turning lappy on this way it magicly showes me both of them

unlikely it can't power two 2.5 inch drives..
i have done it..
using acronis true image to clone one to another while using the main drive to run the acronis application..
most recently on my T43p..

don't try it with 3.5 inch HDD's..

could it be a software issue?

I have done it on both a T41 and a T43 without problems.

There is quite a spread in the "quality" of the electronics for the drive interface in external cases for 2.5" HDDs, so it may well be an issue with the drive cases rather than your laptop.

Cheers,

Bill

Bill
why do you advise not to connect 3.5inch HDD's?
One of the drives, a Maxtor, with external power source is a 3.5inch I assume.
Had no problem with that showing up, just problems with the 2.5inch and an iPod.
