Creating Recovery Disks

#1 Post by hypnos » Fri Jan 13, 2006 12:04 pm

I just received a T42 and before I get to a point that I need to recover I wanted to make sure I had the proper backups.

1) Can you create the recovery disks from the Rescue and Recovery program that boots up from the Access IBM button or do you need to do it from windows?

2) Can you create the equivalent of recovery disks on a USB drive or network drive instead of creating the recovery disks. NOTE: its important that I have an easy way to restore this machine to the original factory image in a few weeks. I read the Rescue and Recovery User Guide, but I couldn't tell if the USB and Network options were for the original factory image or if they were geared more for typical backups.

3) Has anyone tried to use a cloning program like Ghost to image the 2 virgin partitions?

1) I did it under windows, just see if you get the option in the pre-boot phase, I don´t know if the CD/DVD writer works in that phase.

2) No, but you can save an image on an usb drive.

3) Should work, I did it with Apricorn´s EZ-GIG.

Thanks for the quick response.

If I use and external USB drive for the image will it erase everything currently on the drive?

No it won't overwrite your existing data, you select the drive and location(s) of where to save the backup files.

BTW, INAO, you should go ahead and create the recovery disks while you have the opportunity, no telling when a catastropic harddrive failure may happen. Also, I believe you are only allowed to create one set so use good quality media and store them well. Don't use rewriteable media.

Can you not copy the CD/DVD media onto another CD/DVD media?

R&R will only allow you to make one copy from your hard drive, after that you won't have the option to create more product recovery disks. You can copy the optical media you make.
