Problem: AC adaptor
Problem: AC adaptor
Hi, recently my T40 has problems with AC adaptor. Problem seems to be in the plug - that I connect to TP. It seems like it has a "loose" connection - I must rotate it an find the right position to connect it.
Have you ever had the same problem? I looked on the surfaces of the connectors in TP and on the AC adaptor and they seems to be OK. Bud I have the feeling that they are a bit loosy - they move when they are connected from side to side.
What shall I do??

Is it an original IBM adapter or an aftermarket brand.? If so, it might not be the correct size plug. Another possiblility is a bad/broken connection between the cord and plug due to stress on the cord. Will it work if you hold the plug steady in the socket and wiggle the cord around? If either of these, repalce the adapter. Instead of twisting it, while trying not to move the cord, can you push up or down, or left or right on the plug to make it work? It might be the socket is loose on the mainboard, perhaps because the machine has been rested with pressure against the plug. In this case the socket may require resoldering.
thaks for your reply..
so I use original adpator - it worked fine until a week ago, and I don\t know what happen..
I can't push it IN or OUT or Left or Rigt (in these two directions itsits OK) but it moves UP and Down - about 1-2mm...
And how to resolder the SOCKET? can it be made at home?? cos I don't have warranty more..

DC input from AC adaptor
I would certainly bring it to someone aquainted with soldering electronics.
you can disassemble the unit yourself and just bring the print - probably the motherboard to someone used to soldering multilayered prints.
Otherwise your could easily ruin the board alltogether.

It certainly sounds like it is a bad solder joint. Yeah, I'd let someone familiar with soldering do the work for you. It shouldn't be hard as those are likely the largest solder connections on the entire board but if you aren't familiar with soldering techniques you will likely not get a good joint and end up having to do it again.

THE YELLOW PORT IN THE THINKPAD is replaceable WITHOUT needing to SOLDER!
One feature of the T4X that I love!!! Unseen but worth its weight in GOLD!
I have repaired/trashed many a laptop that had a bad ac port on the motherboard....IBM made life easier....
You have to BUY a kit from IBM that costs $20! plus I think about $15 for shipping..it includes a TON of parts BUT it has the ac port that you need!
It plugs into the planar/motherboard and someone used to dealing with thinkpads can do it in about 15 minutes.
Here is the FRU... 26R9985
If you buy the kit an would like to sell the leftovers.... I will buy it for $15 (you pay shipping).

Do you know if the same kit/parts works in the other series? A relatives R40 has the same power socket problem. I can't find that part # in any of the T-series reference manuals, though it does come up via the online parts order interface.
thanks again.
