Should I return my new T42 because of a dark spot/pixel

#1 Post by bigskydream » Mon Jan 16, 2006 4:26 pm

I just received my new T42 and am wondering if I should return/exchange it because it has a dark spot/pixel in the lower left corner. I showed it to my wife and she said I was crazy to worry about it. Is it unrealistic/unreasonable to expect a perfect LCD?

Well, you can return it within a 30 Day period for any reason; although there is a part on the IBM/Lenovo Website that states, depending on your LCD Technology, how many "Dead Pixels" you need for an on-warranty replacement.

See, ThinkWiki; http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_Pixel_Error

See, IBM Personal Computing Support;

Just to clarify; dead pixels don't usually come and go away. That is usually a "stuck" pixel. Usually a TFT pixel that has slightly different response characteristics than the rest of the screen. You can try out the PSP Video (do a search for it); it was designed to get rid of stuck pixels by rapidly changing colors on the screen/. I ran it on my T43 to see what it would do...And it actually managed to "stick" and "unstick" pixels from time to time. Something I didn't know. You can try it out if you like to see if that is actually a "Dead" pixel or a "Stuck" pixel. HTH :)

Definately return the machine, after having had similar problems I noticed that any spot/blemish/dead/stuck or dying pixel(s) becomes a focal point every time you use the machine. It costs you nothing but a little time to send the machine back, you will not look back, and you will only be too glad the day your machine or another is returned with a perfect screen.

I use my machine every day for at least 10 hours a day, I just can't stand the screen having any kind of problem. Although I do accept that it does behave as a dust magnet and does occasionaly receive the odd fingerprint or two.

It's not about being difficult, picky or choosy, it's about receiving what you paid for and you paid for a quality machine.

before you return it, check online for that video christopher_wolf was talking about. i used that to get rid of a stuck pixel on my t42p. the pixel looked like a black dot in the upper left hand corner of my screen. people also recommend rubbing the area while the video is running with a soft cloth, like one you'd use to clean your screen.

try it. it's free and it worked for me. now my display is clear of any irregularities. basically, it's a video that you loop which flashes through a variety of different colors like a strobe that stimulates the stuck pixel into action. the reasoning behind rubbing the screen is that you somehow rearrange the liquid crystals in the pixel. sounds strange, i know and i was skeptical at first but it worked!

Living with a dead pixel is not as bad as some make it out to be. The key factors are place, color I guess. On my main desktop LCD (Sony) I have one on the bottom right that is a red stuck pixel. You can only notice it on very select screens, and 99% of the time it never comes to mind.

If it is only one spot that is off to the side really far, then stick with it, because your next set of laptops might have it worse. I have pretty bad luck with this stuff, so if I get one on the edge, I say screw it and just keep the thing :lol:

If you aren't happy then return it. I would if I were you.

I would return it as well. The screen is, as I understand, one of the most expensive components, if you are to replace it one day by yourself, not like a hard drive, which is not so expensive and easy to replace.

Also the re-sale value of a laptop with such a screen will be lower.
