Problems with XP on ThinkPad T42/ 2nd HDD Adapter

#1 Post by stting » Mon Jan 16, 2006 9:50 pm

Hello all,

I am trying to boot xp off of the 2nd HDD Adapter on my T42. The part no. for the adapter is 62P4554.

I am running linux on HDD0 and I have the original thinkpad xp drive in the hdd adapter. I have not run into any problems with the OS complaining about activation problems.

The problem is that a few minutes after logging in (presumably as the OS is loading drivers), I get a BSOD. The BSOD is the "DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL" one.

My theory is that XP is trying to make the drive in the drive bay (itself) hot-swappable. Hence, as it loads the driver, it momentarily disconnects itself, hence causing XP to crash.

Has anyone else had success with XP using the 2nd HDD Adapter? I would appreciate any pointers for working around this problem.

Thanks!

I found out that if I remove the linux drive in the internal slot and boot into the XP drive in the bay, everything works fine and there is no BSOD. But as soon as I put the drive in, then it doesn't work.

Still clueless as to why though.

Problem somewhat solved

I believe I have fixed the problem, although in a somewhat less than satisfactory way.

The problem is with IBM's APS system. When the other hard drive in the internal bay is detected by XP, it tries to load the APS system for that drive.

I think (though I'm not sure) that there may be some issues with that drive being a linux drive.

My solution was just to uninstall the APS system. Hopefully this won't pose too much of a risk to the health of both hard drives.

If anyone knows of a better workaround, I'd really appreciate some more input.

Thanks!
