Adding 2 sticks of ram to my new T43, but only 1 slot avail

#1 Post by xcgames » Wed Jan 18, 2006 4:05 pm

I bought 2GB (2x1GB) of kingston ram and I wanted to upgrade my machine to 2GB, take out the OEM 512MB that it came with.

Anyways, I just got my new machine today, and to my suprise, I have no access to the OEM ram IBM installed.

Is it possible to take the 512MB out? Or am i stuck with 1.5GB permantely?

I think the other slot is below the keyboard. You can get the OEM chip out.

It's under the keyboard.

You'll need to remove the screws for the keyboard, then you can access the other 512MB.

is it a major operation that'd leave marks behind and void the warranty?

It is really easy. Just pull the screws out from the bottom of the unit with the pics of keyboards by them. Turn the machine over the lift the board out (you might have to snap it out a bit).

As to the warrenty issue, just don't send it back with a third party chip in it.

I dunno, i sent my T41 to IBM w/ my additional 512 chip in it w/o any problems..

As for the intall, takes all of 45 seconds to get the keyboard out, i just did it this morning to install my new a/b/g.

xcgames, there's a FRU removal guide, sometimes referred to as the HMM -- hardware maintenance manual -- available on www.ibm.com for your system. STRONGLY recommend you download it and review it before you install RAM into the first bank. It's easy, but you need to know precisely how it's supposed to be done. You'll have more confidence when you do it.

And ... enjoy the 2 GB. You'll love it, I'm sure.
