Mine is almost here (IBM says it shows as shipping from Taiwan, the UPS tracking has it originating from "CN")
UPS shows it out for delivery, so I'll get it today (if they hurry up and bring it before I leave!).
I called and ordered it on Monday.

My 4840 is now also making creaking noises sometimes when I use the center scroll and/or the left click buttons.

bluedoc, I just received and installed the 93P4780
I like it much better. The keys feel better (though the old one wasn't bad), and the center scroll button doesnt creak of course. I also thought I had slight flex on the rightside with the China made keyboard, which I no longer have.

I was going to post some pics, but it looks just like the pics you posted (except it is the US key layout):

.. .even my old keyboard has all those smudges like yours.

Humpa,

Where is the new one from? I hope it will be from Taiwan rather than from CN since people posted the Taiwan made ones are also high in quality.

Please post some pictures. Did anyone run the fingerprints through the national database? J/K. I thought it was very funny to have so much fingerprints on a brandnew kb. Talk about "extensive" finger-on testing, although on the wrong side of the keyboard.

The flexing problem I can fix with (credit) cards but the shoddy quality and creaking of the keys are just intolerable, especially in a spankingly new notebook.

The 93P4780 is made in Thailand, but over the phone I was told it was being shipped from Taiwan.

bluedoc, I posted some pics for you. One of the original China keyboard, and three of the Thai made 93P4780:

BTW, am liking the new keyboard more and more. The keys definately have a better feel to them.

If you click on my full size image of the the China made one, you can at least compare the fingerprints on mine to the one's on yours. :D

I was told backorder and it would take 10 days. I'm out of town this week though, so I hope it doesn't come and get sent back.

How did you get the tracking number for the order?

My CN keyboard is also creaking on left-trackpoint key presses :(

In other news, our 14" 3VU arrived yesterday, and it comes with the 14" Thai keyboard. It is TRULY, TRULY SUPERIOR. Take this from a guy who has over $600 worth of old-school northgate and IBM keyboards, with keyboard-to-PS2 and PS2-to-USB cables sitting in his closet, "just in case."

I'll post more impressions when (hopefully) the 4780 arrives.

I just called ibm and asked for the tracking number, I supplied them with the case number I was given.
I know I shouldn't, but I feel better knowing that someone else has the creaking problem (I hate to be the only one). :(
Hopefully IBM takes care of this.

I am really liking this Thai keyboard, though ... more and more with each keystroke. :D
