Problems with bluetooth on my T42.

#1 Post by hootpie » Sat Jan 21, 2006 8:39 pm

I had a T43 first and that had the most recent bluetooth related software. I was able to connect my phone to my T43 and transfer files etc. I exchanged my T43 for a T42 (couldn't stand the fan noise) and now my T42 lacks the same bluetooth software.

I have some sort of bluetooth software installed (I have the blue "B" in my system tray) and it looks like this:

As you can see, it lacks any sort of menu for transferring files. I've looked on the IBM webpage and downloaded all the recent drivers/software for bluetooth, but nothing changes.

Any help is appreciated :)

Bluetooth Issues

If you right mouse click on the blue (not red) bluetooth icon in the tray do you then see the file transfer options?

I still can't transfer games over because I'm lacking the "OBEX PUSH" or whatever it is.

The bluetooth software is different on the T43 (Bluetooth IV) than the T42 (Bluetooth III or II, if I remember correctly); in either case, you shouldn't be lacking the OBEX File Push service; that makes me think that you have the Mircosoft Base Bluetooth Service which has few, if any, support for special services like that.

Bluetooth works fine on my system. While I was installing Bluetooth on an X40, I discovered how poor Microsoft's Bluetooth service is when it comes to services. You have to make Virtual COM Ports for everything, it has piddling shell integration, etc. In contrast, the IBM Bluetooth Service is clean and quick with [censored] near perfect shell integration. As an example, before I installed the correct drivers for the bluetooth service on the X40, I couldn't get it to talk to a Treo 650; including file transfer. Even though the Treo 950 didn't explicity present the OBEX Object service, my T43 could send an mp3 to it by simply right-clicking on the mp3 and selecting to send it to the device. When I later explored more of the Microsoft bluetooth driver setup, I discovered that it was *very* bare when it came to the services it supports; in short, nothing. Until I overwrote it with the adapter drivers, weird stuff would happen. Add to this that both Bluetooth tray icons look similar; the only difference is that the microsoft bluetooth icon is smaller.

Try "My bluetooth Places." Right-clicking on an item should offer some "discover services" option. Also, a "show my services" is in there somewhere.

Frankly, the split-personality of MS' Bluetooth configuration and devices, adn the one that the IBM (or Belkin, for that matter) software installs, confuses and misleads me DAILY. YMMV.
