New HDD spins down when shock protection system triggers

#1 Post by RolloM » Mon Jan 23, 2006 8:09 am

Hi,

I recently replaced the 60 MB HDD of my T42 by a 100 MB model (Hitachi, too). The new HDD spins down everytime when the shock protection system goes on (happens every now and then if you have the TP on your knees). The old disk only parked its heads which took much less time and was far more quiet. Furthermore I don't believe spinning down again and again is very healthy for the drive...

Does anyone know a way to get the new drive behave like the old one did?

Thanks

R.

Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums :)

Well; the drive should be parking its heads due to the HDAPS system if a shock is deemed imminent. I don't know about the Toshiba drive, but the two HDDs I have put in my T43 all seem to ramp the heads. Usually, though, this varies from one HDD manufacturer ot another. So it could be implemented as Spin Down Only, Head Ramp Only, Spin Down + Head Ramp, etc.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.
