IBM Certified Refurbished Thinkpads

#1 Post by LDNA » Wed Jan 25, 2006 2:01 am

i just ordered a refurbished T41p (2373GGU) from the IBM canada website since it seem like such a good deal $1049 CDN. but now i am having second thought. anyone had any problems with there refurbished unit from ibm since the warranty is only 3 months. i don't really care about the spec of the laptop as long as the screen is sxga and the cheapest NEW t42/t43 with sxga screen is $1999. is it worth the risk since after the 15% tax we have to pay here, i will be saving more then the cost of the refurbished unit.

Hey,

I bought a refurbished t42p from thinkpadworld.
Issue with the keyboard : after 3 months the "S" key was broken.
The "Mack" warranty is located in NYC, and then I needed to send the laptop back to the US (I'm in Europe). I then decided to buy a keyboard ... it was cheaper than return cost. Unfortunately the keyboard I received also have an problem on left CTRL key ... I'm discussing now with IBM parts Belgium to see how to proceed, but I'm afraid I'll need to buy another kb !

So ... onsite warranty is a must -- and I don't think you can have it with refurbished laptops. It's a question of risk -- I'll won't do it again.

Cheers!

Hi, I also ordered the same laptop today  Really like the specs for the price, but not liking the 3months warranty either. Called in to ask about an extension but won't allow it. Did a search and others seem to have good experiences with certified used items from IBM. Hopefully these will be good too :)

Some from thinkpadworld are not refurbished and then come with IBM 3 years warranty, like this one :

BTW IBM told me that a new KB was waiting for me at UPS centre here in Belgium. I went there are had a brand new KB to replace the one with the broken CTRL key.
Even on parts, IBM service is a must !

Enjoy T4x :)

I took delivery on a certified used T 23 from IBM last week (thanks to the members of the forum for help on that decision). It was in beautiful shape, no dead pixels, no scratches, looked practically new. A few days later the CDRW starting acting up, I called IBM and two days later I had a replacement in my hands.

This is why I bought IBM/Lenovo.

LDNA,

I've ordered lots of IBM Certified Used equipment from IBM Canada. I've never had a problem dealing with them.

I have a CFU T30 I got from IBM 6 months ago. Great shape, looks almost new and have not had any problems.

I've had a certified used T40 for about a year now. It came in mint condition with a new battery and with the remainder of the original warranty (not a commmon offering at this point by IBM). There is still about a 9 months left.

No problems at all and it was a very good price. I often inform others of IBM certified used machines as a viable alternative.

I purchased a 1.7 T42 14.1" 40gb, with abg, bluetooth, minidock and case for $950 with a 3 year warranty that started september 05. Pretty good deal, but hear are a few things to watch out for
  • Ensure there is a valid updateable OS and that you have the valid Certificate of Authenticity.

Make sure there are no Supervisor or HDD passwords set on the machine

Ask for the serial # and check it on IBM/Lenovo's online checker.
I didn't know some of these things got a pirated copy of windows that could not get any of the service packs, but at least the others were OK.
...before it's too late.
