IBM T41 Freezes Coming Out of Standby/Sleep/Hibernate

#1 Post by teknerd » Sun Jan 29, 2006 10:05 pm

-Several days ago i updated several of the programs (Access Connections, Presentation Director, and a couple other) and Flashed the BIOS (moving from 3.04 to 3.19) on my IBM Thinkpad. Since then whenever I try to put the computer into suspend (sleep) mode or hibernate it freezes when coming out of it.

-Coming out of sleep mode i can get to the desktop, but it freezes there, whereas with hibernate it does not get past the loading screen with the white bar at the bottom.

-I've already spent several hours surfing the net and talking to tech support with no luck. I tried updating the embedded controller program, and all the software i installed. Unfortuantely you can apparently not roll back the BIOS on thinkpads and i can't find previous editions of any of the software i installed (although i highly suspect its a BIOS issue, since a system restore did nothing to help). IBM wants me to send my laptop in, but i need it and cannot be without it for 2 weeks.

-Any ideas/suggestions would be most helpful

System Specs:
-IBM Thinkpad T41 - Model #2373-A03
-OS information: Microsoft Windows XP - 5.10.2600 - Service Pack 2
-BIOS version: 3.19 (1RETDNWW) (10-13-2005) - Embedded Controller Version 3.04
-1.6GHZ Pentium M - 1 GB PC 2700 - 80GB HD

As a temporary measure, you could try disabling hibernation / suspend and just turning on/off until you are ready to send it in to IBM.

I have for now, but i'd ideally like to solve it without sending it in to IBM

I have a similar problem with my x31.

it always freezes when coming out of hibernation if it is runing on battery power only, and it never freezes if it is plugged into an outlet. in the second scenario, once it is up and running, i can unplug it, and it works just fine.

is your hibernation / freeze problem also related to battery vs. AC power?

I had similar problem 2 months ago for my T41p. I fixed it by getting rid of SP2. Now it works just fine. Another possibility is windows upgrade especially 'malicious software removal tools'. Check these two things and come back with your results.

If you are using firefox and it is open before standby/hibernate/etc., then it is definitely a flash plugin issue. I had this problem and it was resolved by disabling flash in firefox. There is a thread about it here somewhere, can't seem to find it.
