which router/wireless G card combo for solid performance
which router/wireless G card combo for solid performance
I know there's tonnes of info out in these forums, so much so in fact I'm a little bewildered...
anyways my two laptops are 2373 4wg (with wireless b card to be swapped with something else of the g variety)
and a 2373 cxg (with a wireless b and g card that I'd like to remain if possible)
can anyone tell me which router/wireless card combo is gonna give me solid g performance with the option of upgrading to super g in the future.
cheers for any advice on the matter.

I don't know about upgrading to Super G, but my Intel 2915ABG has been giving me rock-solid connections with almost all the routers I have connected to; also, it connects at 54.0MBps most of the time as well.

First post!
Hi,
Just bought a 2nd hand T40 a few days ago on Ebay and just discovered this forum today!
Two days ago I upgraded the Intel 2100b card in my T40 for a Gigabyte GN WIAG02 SuperG 108Mpbs Atheros based card.
I did get the 1802 error at first, tried the no-1802 app but it didnt do anything. So, then I upgraded the BIOS and it worked!
I have an existing Netgear DG834GT ADSL Wifi Router and I am currently getting great reception all over the house. I previously used the WIAG02 in my old NEC laptop for about 4 months and have found it to incredibly stable provided I run my Netgear router in 108Mbps only mode.
Just bought a Samsung 80GB HD today at lunchtime and going to upgrade that too tonight - wish me luck!

Both wireless cards (Intel and IBM) are certified 802.11 cards.
Just make sure whatever access point you get is certified (not the same as "compatible"), and you should be fine.

i highly recommend thinkpad abg and a 3com router.

Wireless Cards
I have used both the IBM A/B/G Wireless II (Atheros 5004 chipset) and Intel 2200b/g in my T40 with great success connecting to all types of access points. I have a Linksys WRT54G at home running the HyperWRT firmware which is rock solid, but I regularly connect to Cisco 1200's, D-Link's, a Netgear MR814 and a Belkin with no issues.
I actually have a IBM A/B/G Wireless II mini-pci for sale if you are interested. P/M me if you are.

hey thanks for all the responces.
haha, alas though I'm still unsure of what I should get.
I seem to see the WRT54G getting mentioned alot.
basically I'm after something that's hassel free and just works without adding to much extra confusion.
k so the hunt continues.
oh, good luck with the hard drive upgrade; its easy peasy, I did mine with just a couple of unscrews.
I love the fact that these machines are modular by design, imagine a thinkpad with the dock ii, three internal hard drives and a proper graphics card in the pci slot with a couple of extra moniters straped to it. wow!

for the love of god, do not get the WRT54G . all the WRT54G out right now are version 4 and they are absolute horrid. (crash, overheat, etc. check review from hundred on amazon)

They are now selling Version 5. Firmware needs to be replaced right out of the box, but then they will work correctly. Personally I prefer Netopia.o1001010 wrote:for the love of god, do not get the WRT54G . all the WRT54G out right now are version 4 and they are absolute horrid. I have two WRT54Gs set up at two different locations. One is about eight months old and has been solid as a rock. I bought the second one about a month ago - no problems with it, either.o1001010 wrote:for the love of god, do not get the WRT54G . all the WRT54G out right now are version 4 and they are absolute horrid.
