Seagate Momentus 7200.1 100GB compatible with T41 2373

#1 Post by NoBob » Fri Feb 03, 2006 2:14 pm

I'm considering replacing my T41's 5400/40GB hard drive with a Seagate 7200/100GB and wanted to find out if anyone has done this. Are there any pitfalls to avoid?

Don't know if it's useful but BIOS: 1RETDKWW (3.16); SMBIOS: 2.33

And I just wanted to find out if I'm right in thinking I need the IDE, not SATA disk?

And is this any more compatible that the equivalent speeed/size Hitatchi Travelstar?

Thanks,

NoBob.

I know that it's an IDE drive, and I have a 7200RPM jobbie in mine (Hitachi [for IBM]60GB 7200RPM) and it works well enough.

I can't speak to whether or not you'll get that "2010" error (correct me if im wrong on this anyone) or some such other error when installing a non Hitachi drive. I do know there are several dozens on here who use non-hitachi drives in their machines though.

Hope this helps.

For a T Series machine, you only get the error on a T43 if you try to install a non-IBM Certified Drive and the firmware doesn't work across the PATA-SATA bridge; if it detects that the firmware is doing something funky on the drive and it is non-certified, then it throws the 2010.

For one reason or another, some user-bought HDDs work straight out of the box without a 2010 error and some don't. There is a BIOS update that removes the visual cue that the error generates, hence the user need not press Esc to continue, but not the pause and the beep as far as I know.

Further, I don't know which, if any drives, show signs of actual problems when it comes to data transfer because of this error; the error is supposedly an indication that the drive will not "agree" too well with the PATA-SATA bridge. HTH :)

I have the seagate 5400RPM 100GB on my T41 and it works without any errors.

Ok so the error only comes from a non-IBM certified drive... When my UltraBay HDD adapter came in today, I put in one of the Hitachi 40g drives from my R40 and it still gave me the 2010 error.

Am I doing anything wrong here?

That is the first I have heard of a 2010 Error coming up with an R40 and a 40GB Hitachi in the 2nd HDD Adapter. :?

Sorry, let me make myself a little more clear.

I'm going to be using my 40gb Hitachi hard drive from my old R40 in my HDD adapter on my T43. Today when I was getting everything together to install Ubuntu, I took my primary hard drive out of the computer and put in the 40gb Hitachi to install Ubuntu since I don't have an external CD-ROM drive. When I booted the computer up is when I got the 2010 error.

Is this drive considered a non-IBM certified drive for the T43?

Yup, same thing here; I got a 60GB 7200RPM Hitachi HDD and it gave me the same 2010 error when I did the primary install. It doesn't, however, affect anything else as far as I know...Data Transfer, etc all work perfectly in the Bay as they did in the Primary when I installed Ubuntu.

So that reduces the "Non-IBM Drive" descriptor to a flag in most cases that doesn't seem to affect performance, at least for this drive. HTH :)

Thanks for responding, but it's still not clear whether a 100G/7200 Momentus will work in a T41, so I won't be buying it off a net site. I rang up a local store - overclockers.co.uk - that generally does good deals but they won't be getting the 7200 Momentus in any time soon. If I could buy it from there at least I'd be able to take it back if it didn't work, with little hassle.

That 100GB Momentus should work in a T41; I see no reason for it not to.

I just hope you don't get a hitachi 7200rpm drive. I have one of those puppies, and [censored], they're loud!

I second that. The Hitachi 7200 is like a vacuum cleaner.
