SoundMax upgrade problem

I just went through the software update program and decided to try the SoundMax upgrade to version 5.12.01.5410. It balked and suggested a manual install which didn't work either. So I read the readme which said that you had to uninstall the old version first. So I did that, rebooted, and (without sound) tried to run the setup program, it said windows could not access the file, not appropriate permissions. This was in the administrator logon. I aosl tried the software update program again, that didn't work either.

Anyway, I rebooted again, the found new hardware box came up and it installed some version of soundmax but there is no soundmax icon in the contro panel window.

Any thoughts? This is a T40 with XPpro.

Okay, answering myself...the moral is, if all else fails, shutdown the firewall (zonealarm) and ahtivirus (Symantec). Of course, disconnect from the internet first. After that, the soundmax installed normally...
