Dropped my 6 month old (T43)

#1 Post by PELICANVIDEO » Sun Feb 05, 2006 2:06 pm

24hours after dropping my 6 month old T43, I'm obseessing over it. I am surprised it was hurt at all; I had it in it's case and dropped it from the trunk of my car,, maybe 30 inches. Well, maybe I found the achilles heel of the T43?
As the picture shows, it's mostly cosmetic, but boy is it ugly to me. I need to get it repaired, but wonder how much it'll cost? Any ideas?

Rick

I dropped my T42 from 10-12 feet...onto a corner...

Yes, my corner was crushed. It's actually the left hand side of the unit, underneath the USB ports...

Luckily, it wasn't my fault...so the person who knocked it over paid for it. Yes, it does suck for the case to break...in my case anyways, it cost about $150-200CDN to fix, but that was ALL that was broken to my amazement. I didn't even notice until I got home that day...and then my heart broke into a gazillion pieces...

What I suggest you do is contact IBM, tell them what happened, and then tell them how utterly disappointed you are in their products...maybe they'll do something.

Here is a breakdown of pricing:

EasyServ pricing information

Today many of our corporate customers are faced with the challenge of managing older thinkpad assets. IBM offers an economical solution with the EasyServ repair program. Customers have a 'one-stop' option with 24x7 phone support and overnight express transportation via Airborne Express. With the majority of thinkpads shipping the same business day they arrive, EasyServ depot service is a quick mechanism to return a workhorse thinkpad to productive use. EasyServ's new prices for 'out of warranty'* thinkpads makes this choice even more attractive.

EasyServ pricing information Tier Price Description
Tier 1 $187 SW Reloads, Replace Plastic covers, Reseat cards
Tier 2 $285 Hard drive, DVD, CD-Rom, Keyboard, Misc. cards
Tier 3 $425 System Boards, CPU
Tier 4 $595 LCD, Multiple Tier Repair (2 - 4)

* Service also available for in warranty units damaged by drops or liquid spill at higher prices, and all prices are subject to applicable state and local taxes.

Thanks to the moderator, i cannot see the picture you posted so have no clue on how serious it is. What i would suggest is to talk to IBM, get all the details like the part numbers of the parts that require replacement etc.. and then if they won't do it for a discount rate etc. hunt for it on EBay. Many times people just sell off replacement parts on EBay and you may be at luck in finding one for you.

This again? Seriously, what is wrong with a *link* to a picture instead of embedding it with the [img] tags? :?

If you want to try EBay!

EDIT TWO: There is a seller called TPADS-PLUS (sells), also buys under the name nw-guru (he is one and the same).

He is good about pricing etc, plus he owns/works for a store that handles a lot of thinkpads. Contact him OR your local authorized repair facility, this will be the BEST solution for getting your base with serial number attached as it should be.

The serial number on the base of the unit can be a PITA to remove (if you want to trasfer to the new base); as well as the COA (most cases it is damaged when removed) What you can do to it, heat it with a hairdryer (carefully) and SLOWLY peel-it off as you heat it ( easy to rip). If you rip it DO NOT continue peeling it off, instead go back and try to remove it as one piece (attached to COA) then place on wax paper. The COA is easy to remove, without destroying the case OR COA in the process; however you have to have a lot of time and patience to do it.

EDIT: Something wrong with EBay! I can verify the thinkpadsrus name (have under favorite sellers). I will post the correct one as soon as I can get in to check.

EDIT two: changed user name

It seems that it is only the base cover beeing damaged. Looking at the swedish site a base cover spare part costs 366 SEK with taxes. Would transform into 25$ or something in the US.

Called IBM, but they need to see it to estimate. DHL picking it up tomorrow. Support Rep said it may even be covered by the warranty. Wow, that'd be too good to be true.

Sent it out and got it back in 4 business days,, FIXED! NO CHARGE. I cannot tell you how happy I am, and how great it is that they fixed this for free. I am a huge fan of my T43, and just became a bigger one.

you are blessed by the gods of repair.. :)
a break like that usually is met by an estimate for out of warranty repair..

also, when i encounter an embedded picture i just make it into a link..
not sure why other mods don't do that..
but then i am well known to be easy going..

I took a look at your picture, and I agree, I would not want my ThinkPad looking like that. I'm very happy for you that you got your ThinkPad repaired without charge. You must lead a charmed life! :D

Off topic: But, that fella that had liquid spilled in his T series should throw it down some stairs and get it fixed. The prices are better than the $900 system board replacement.
