T43 keeps on freezing

#1 Post by FreeSolaris10 » Mon Feb 06, 2006 3:03 am

my T43 is barely 5 months old...recently I noticed XP keeps on freezing on me...most of the time it freezes when I moved the laptop little bit.
Sometimes even without moving, XP would just freez...
because I have to power it off completely to reboot, it corrupted mbr one time and I had to fix it using XP CD....what a pain in the [censored] that was..

Would any of you experts know what's going with this?
I am suspecting this is hardware related problem because when I load linux live cd, it still freezes...I disabled the active hard drive protection, it still freezes, i re-seated the memory card, and it stilll freezes...
this is driving me crazy because I am in business school so laptop is like my life now...
please help!!! T.T --> crying face

It seems that there's something wrong with your HDD.

1. when you moved your tp
2. corrupted mbr one time when you boot your tp.

Did you try to repartition your HDD and format before your reinstalling your system.

It want to be a T60, but I can't let it be.

I have been having the same problem. My T43p freezes if I move it; it also seems to be related to un/plugging the power supply. I found this article from IBM:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-54956

"Systems with the Intel 2200 or Intel 2915 wireless adapter may hang when the power is disconnected. In some rare cases, when an Intel 2200 or 2915 wireless adapter is updated to the version 9.0.1.21, the system may freeze when the power is disconnected from the system. To work-around this issue you will need to change your graphics properties."

The article is in reference to the Intel video chipset, but it could be a similar problem.

I have just updated all of my drivers, including the Intel Wireless card and the ATI video drivers. I am going to roll back the the video driver to a previous version -- I'll let you know if this works.

Another idea: IBM has the "active protection" which actually stops the hard drive when laptop movement is detected.

thanks for the replies.
Here is a list of what I tried without any successes of resolving the freezing issue.

.Disabled Active Protection
.Reseated extra 512mb ram I installed when I bought the labtop
.Reseated the harddrive
.Uninstalled the Active Protection but this resulted in the blue screen of death at which point I had to use XP cd to perform restoration to recover the OS.

I finally called IBM technical support. He was suspecting it's the problem with system board. The complicated thing is that I purchased the laptop in US, but I am abroad right now in France...the guy told me to contact local french ibm certified dealer which I would like to avoid for various reasons.

I will roll back to the previous version of wireless driver to see if that solves the problem.
pleae keep me updated about your progress.
thanks a bunch

I've isolated the problem to the harddrive.
When I press little bit near the finger print reader (above where the hard drive seats), the system freezes every single time.
I am getting a new hard drive tommorow and hopefully this will make the problem go away.

In case, the problem still exists even with the new hard drive, it's probably the connection of the drive. in any case, will update tommorow when I replace my hard drive.

Cause of freezing

#6 Post by macfanblake » Thu Apr 27, 2006 9:31 am

Thought I'd update with my resolution.

One day I had the left front corner (where PCMCIA slots are) of the laptop hanging over the edge of a table. When I rested my hand in this area, the screen flickered, went blank, and the machine froze. The screen came back on.

My freeze was happening from the case flexing -- something internally must have been shorting. Maybe video card?

I was able to repeat this behavior to verify this caused the freezing. It also explains why the machine froze every time I moved it.

The machine was replaced by my IT group.
