Software Installer/New Access Connections RELEASE

#1 Post by cruzlite » Tue Feb 07, 2006 5:49 pm

I was pleasantly suprised to find new access connections (4.1...)
on the software installer today. (Have been waiting for 4.01)
Aside from trying to use my old desktop icon to start new AC, (Which will not work & gave me a grey code sheet...very confussing for a no tech like myself), all went without a hitch, (Including profiles present & intact)!!

Along with AC I found about a half dozen other updates, (Most dated 2/6/06)

All updates installed provoked no cpu use spikes, etc.

I have found some settings that needed to be reset, so I am reviewing settings on all updated/installed apps.

SOFTWARE INSTALLER & ACCESS CONNECTIONS ROCK!

I just did these updates too.

It also downloaded a bios update, which freaked me out a little, but it seemed to work without a hitch.

I had about 35 updates...
...before it's too late.

The Software Installer, and the whole ThinkVantage/IBM Suite for that matter, is pretty innovative and useful; it does a great job of putting Thinkpads just that much further beyond most other laptops.

Compare that against my old HP ze5170, which I got with a BIOS version that was already 1.5 years old; to this date, there hasn't been one BIOS revision for it. The HP would hang on startup in the best case, worst case it wouldn't even boot up with a new HDD because the BIOS couldn't talk to it due to the lack of revisions for near *4 years*. I tried everything to update it, but it wasn't easy and the support site for it didn't help one bit.

I consider myself luck to be able to use Software Installer and the rest of the aoftware that IBM/Lenovo puts on here. :)

I just went back to the old version of Access Connections....3.81. With the new one (4.?) I had problems with the 802.11 powering off for no reason at all. I think it was usually after hibernation...not sure. The new one also added a couple of processes (both started with an A).

So for me, the new version of Access Connections added two processes and made my wireless erratic. I'll see if going back to 3.81 solves my problem. I do know I have two less processes now.

yup...did the same with mine. I downgraded my Access Connection to 3.81 because 802.11 constantly powering off itself...

I guess new update is not always working the way you expected.

IMO the version 4 user interface is generally a HUGE improvement over the version 3 user interface.

Cheers,

Bill

It does indeed look slightly better and somewhat brighter than the previous version; there are also many more features displayed as well. I like just about all of them, especially in the Wireless Connection Status window where it tells you everything about the connection including the power consumption and allows you to modify the settings in-situ. :)

Well my big complaints on the GUI are that its not as compatible with my Visual Style as the previous version, and I liked the connection icons when you first launch it (with the transfering animation).

Lol, I know these arent as important as functionality, thats just what I have to complain about.

ok i have reverted back to 4.01
this new version needs me to open and close my FF for the proxy settings to take effect.

The same moron that removed the red & blue strips from the ultranav buttons... I am totally [censored] after nearly 30 installation-un-installation. I am calling them tomorrow to get my AC fixed...

For people who are complaining about new AC4.11 switching off the Radio, go to "global settings" under AC->Configure and uncheck the enable automatic radio control option.

I also sufferd on the first day of AC4.11 on my T43, and even the above also didn't seem to help but I gave it one more day and things fell in place.

AC4.11a is working fine in my laptop, it has FireFox support and that' great...haven't tried the new peer-to-peer thingy

I appreciate the tip. But the FF and peer to peer aren't enough of a benefit for me to go back to the new AC. Seems like every time I download a ThinkPad update I have to delete stuff I've never wanted and generally clean up my computer again. And the new AC just added a new folder to My Documents and two new running processes.

I'll stick with the AC that didn't make me hunt all over for a setting to leave the radio on.
