Well, I would make a sub-series of T Tablets; the only thing I am worried about is the screen stiffness and the durability of the hinges. Unless IBM/Lenovo comes up with a converging 2-to-1sliding hinge system (Hmmm, sounds familiar to the Keyboard on the 701
) that takes the standard hinge positions and combine them into one when the screen is rotated 180 degrees, I am not sure how they could get a large, single hinge that is both compact enough and strong enough to hande the screen. The LCD and hinge stiffness in Thinkpads is some of the best I have ever seen; a big concern would be keeping it whilst making a 14.1" T Series Tablet.
The Sony XBrite screens aren't for everybody; some people like them alot and some don't. They can be annoying when working in an office setting and reflecting many components of artificial light, especially fluorescents. Somewhat trivial considering that you could just make the screens in different configs then; one standard, the other glossy.

Oh, wishes!
What about Lenovo had a look at even the cheapest competitors:
CD/DVD drive speed - why the f... can't it be automatic like any other laptop. I'm sick and tired of switching to Silent if I want to watch a DVD and then back to Normal/High Performance when copying files. Each time it requires a reboot of the machine (If you don't like watching movies to the sound of a jet engine).
Same goes with the Fan noise. Year, I know really cheap laptops with desktop processors are howling, but other brands with Pentium mobiles are much more silent than T4x ThinkPad’s and stop the fan when there is no need for cooling.
.. and surely as others pointed out: one more USB at least.

You are right, this really should be automatic like it is with other laptops though. Until they fix this, you can still change the CD ROM speed on the fly in the Power properties applet without a reboot.erasmus wrote:CD/DVD drive speed - why the f... can't it be automatic like any other laptop. Right click your desktop away from any icons, pick ScreenSaver, hit the "Power" button all the way at the bottom above the "Cancel", pick the "Advanced Settings" tab and the CD ROM speed is right at the top of the list.
You can also use the "Thinkpad Configuration" tool in the "Access IBM" menu to do this, just pick the "Power Management" and continue from the hit "Power" button step above.

Hmmm, at least for my T43, you don't have to follow the reboot box for a change in Optical Drive speed; I tried it without rebooting and it works fine. This also seems to work on my friend's T42; I imagine that since the hardware in the drives is pretty much identical throughout the T4X Series, depending on which drive you get, you should be able to do this as long as you have Windows XP since it only has to change a setting on the drive. If there was such a big barrier to it, you wouldn't see the "cheaper" companies and the optical drives they put in their laptops doing it automatically.

Hitachi actually made a P4 Water-cooled laptop and marketed it over in Japan, that was a few years ago and I don't know what happened to it now. If we are going to sitck with the Intel Mobile chipsets, I think that air-cooling is pretty efficient at cooling down the CPU and system as a whole. Maybe if it was a P4 or a desktop AMD that somebody decided to shoe-horn into a laptop , then maybe.

I second the better DVD burner options. I'm currently eyeing Plextor's new PX-608U (which is slim, burns just about everything, relatively fast, and comes with Plextools as a bonus, and apparently doesn't require a power cord, though I'm waiting for some real reviews to believe that one) and thinking of moving my 2nd hard drive internally, the DVD burner outboard...

Smaller footprint, thickness and weights for the T series with 15". It seems to me that the lcd frame could be made smaller and thinner.
A brighter display.
An lcd lid lock mechanism in which there are no protuding parts.
Return of the foldable supports in the bottom
Dual Thinklight, that turns off after a configurable interval to save on batteries.
S-video input with mpeg2/4 real time encoder.
Firewire on all models
Ultrabay slot cover shipped with all systems and replacement trackpoint caps.
Rubber covers for ethernet and modem, of type that you can't loose because it is 'tied' to the system.
The option of other OS and no OS on open-bay systems.

T440s OK so far.
T420s NVIDIA graphics. Nice, then MB failure.
T400s Workhorse. two of'em, both faulty display with vertical stripes.
T43 °very nice° - MB reflown and dead, two of'em.
T42 15°, dead onboard wireless.
T40, dead memory slot, stolen from me
T30, stolen from me
TP600 dead

You can already get different OSes on the Thinkpad from what I have seen on the website, you just have to order it that way from the beginning.
My 701C as rubber covers for the ports that are tethered to the chassis, not too much of an extra benefit
I bought a few extra trackpoint caps, just to make sure I have spares for the T43. Three came with it initially, although they all differed to begin with.

-S-video.
-Brighter 14" screen with better viewing angles. Flexview possible?
-Would an all magnesium chassis (on bottom too) make it lighter?
-Decent usable speakers for watching a movie.
-Ditto on consistent keyboard quality (why don't they just use NMB on all of them?).
-Keep the ultranav as is and don't change the keyboard and ultranave colors.
-Motherboard design that allows 4GB RAM to be addressable (this is possible, there are motherboards that do this, it is not true that it's an inherent limitation of the 32bit architecture, to only be able to address 3GB--as Lenovo asserts).
-ATI Mobility X1600 256MB.
-Good sound card with line in.

I haven't ordered one yet, but I wish TP had...
1. Built-in FM Tuner (can't imagine working without radio ON)
2. Good Sound Card
3. Brighter LCD

Embedded hight safety / security sistem made of:
- Embedded GPS/galileo receiver. Antenna is a strip of conductive tape in the back of lid cover.
- Embedded GSM phone with SIM holder in a slot somewhere.
The machines sends positions and is ack'ed by communication with a central server. SMS is used that track TP's on the territory.
This is done is done as long a battery is connected, in background. The resources are also available to the OS for other applications, however.

I use a Sony Ericsson GC83 PC card with Cingular EDGE (Laptop Connect - unlimited data) cellular service and Live 365 internet radio www.live365.com . I listen to radio all the time on my ThinkPad, and it is virtually ad free! Quite a bit better than FM at the house. At my desk, I have a couple of small Altec Lansing 120i portable AC-powered speakers that give decent sound from the headphone jack.princeatul wrote:I haven't ordered one yet, but I wish TP had...

no, those are just heatpipes on the CPU cooler... T4x uses them, as does the T20-22 (the 23 didnt). they are tubes with gas inside that expands and contracts under heat to transfer it to the fins, where the fan blows it out.donking! wrote:Just curious. Is the T60 now using some sort of liquid cooling system? I'm looking at pages 76 and 77 of the maintenance manual. It sort of looks like it does.nirvana0001 wrote:2TB, water cooling, 1" body depth. that's all i want

That sounds pretty interesting! Though I don't think in my country that option (though not impossible to achieve) would be much viableGomJabbar wrote:I use a Sony Ericsson GC83 PC card with Cingular EDGE (Laptop Connect - unlimited data) cellular service and Live 365 internet radio www.live365.com .
