sharing files over wireless network.. shared documents only?

hi there!
I'm trying to set up a wireless network over here and am pondering whether to use XP's built in wireless networking or using the software provided by IBM.
I checked out the windows XP networking soft and was a little dissapointed that I can only share files with other machines that are placed in the shared documents folder.
Ideally i'd like to be able to share all folders files and drives on my wireless network...
can the IBM software provide a way of doing this?
Am I missing some software setting that'll allow me to do this with the XP networking software?

The Windows connection software and IBM's Access Connections are just connectivity software. There is a setting in Access Connections about Internet Connection sharing, but other than that, these products have nothing to do with file sharing. What you are seeing is Simple File sharing. Get rid of that and you can share anything in Windows XP Pro irrespective of wired or wireless connection. If you are using XP Home, you are restricted to simple file sharing so far as I recall. ... I only tested the P2P options in Access Connections 4.11a (The whiteboard feature is excellent by the way) and it does a pretty good job of send and receiving files within a little network. The only way that I can always share file in XP Pro is to mark them, or the disk they are on, as shared; only then can they be shared.

anything similar to the access connections peer to peer thing, but standalone?? some program i can run in another computer, and achieve the same functionality?

you can configure your other wireless pc's to run in ad-hoc mode to set up a peer to peer with your ibm. is that what you are talking about? You can manually set up your IP configuration through the network adapters properties or use the network setup wizard (which I personally have not used). If you have desktops with usb ports linksys/belkin/d-link/ and others make little "Highlighter Pen" looking wireless antenae. They work reasonably well in a close environment, but don't expect constant perfect connectivity.

I have to admit though, I'm now more confused than ever....
I am a total newbie when it comes to networking so am really just looking for the most simple way possible to achieve my goal
basically to have my first laptop as peminently attached over ethernet to the router, and to have my second laptop for 'roaming' around the house sharing the internet connection via my wireless router (WAG54GS) and sharing some files and folders from the 'grounded' laptop.
so somehow I got the second laptop to share the internet connection ok, now I'm just looking to get it sharing files.
I see there's the option to right click a folder, then under sharing and security you can click the option to 'share this folder on a network' so I check this box and go and check my 'roaming' laptop in shared documents and don't see the folder I shared
It's prolly just one setting I've missed along the line someplace..
Any insight would be great.

I have the same type setup. 3 routers and a switch. All I do is right click what I need to share, and enable sharing on that folder/files. I make sure both puters are set to "WORKGROUP" (or whatever you like). I reboot all the machines, and I am in.

You can also try setting your tcp/ip settings.

Log into your router and see what your LAN IP, subnet, and gate is. Write it down.
As an example:
Lan: 192.168.2.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.10
Disable ALL firewalls (to start)
1) Right click "My Network Places" and choose properties
2) Right click your "local area connection" and choose properties
3) Scroll down to internet protocol (TCP/IP) choose properties
4) Choose radio button "use the following IP Adresss"
5) COMPUTER 1
Put in "ip address" 192.168.2.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.10

6) COMPUTER 2
Put in "ip address" 192.168.2.3
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.10

7) Reboot both machines. Then right click what you need to share and you're good to go. If this fails, use a jump drive.

The folder won't be in shared documents on the "roaming laptop". It can be found in "My Network Places"

You may have to "Add a Network Place" on the roaming laptop. Click on that and a wizard starts. Pick "choose another network location". In the "Internet or network address" box type "\\" followed by the workgroup name of the stationary laptop, then "\" followed by the share name of the folder you shared on the stationary laptop. For example:"\\stationarylaptop\folder I shared".

If the stationary laptop has a password, you'll have to enter it to access the shared folder. If you want to change files on the stationary laptop from the roaming laptop, make sure that you set the permissions for sharing on the folder you shared to allow users to change files (back on the sharing tab).
