How Strict on Return Date?
How Strict on Return Date?
I have a new T42 coming (soon I hope) from a warrenty repair (purchased directly from IBM). It was/is my intention to evaluate the quality of repair, and decide whether to return it or not. However, my 30 Day from invoice window is fast approaching. If it goes a day or two over, what is IBMs attitude.?Has anyone made a return sligtly over the 30 days?
for 30 Days, for any reason,
After 30 Days, if still under warranty:

I agree, I had one dead pix right in the middle of the screen and it drove me nuts. I told Bill and he had me send it back to IBM and my new one is enroute!TREX wrote:I was wondering how many dead pixels one must have in order to return the unit for another one. We pay good money for these boxes, and I don't think even one should be tolerated.
Should be here in a couple of days!

If you exchange, ibm will wait for your laptop and check it out before shipping you a replacement.
If you do a return, you can order your new thinkpad first and wait for it to arrive before sending in your old one (as long as you don't go over your 30 days, of course!). You will have 2 charges on your cc in the interim, though, like you mentioned.
I did a return instead of an exchange, and it took a total of 8 days. I sent my thinkpad via UPS on Jul 1, and my cc was creditted on Jul 9.

FWIW, IBM would rather have a happy customer than an unhappy customer..
and
overall, over many years, i have seen this to be the case..
rules are rules, don't test the limits..
call for an RMA within the 30 days from invoice date..
you have 10 days to get the thinkpad back to RTP, NC..

The 30 days starts on the day of the invoice, which is also when you can see your serial number, and when they actually bill your credit card.rhema83 wrote:What if mine is on backorder? When does the 30 days start counting?
Bill said this:plucky duck wrote:Is it 30 days from invoice date to notify them of a return, or within 30 days to have it back in their depot?

... so, just call and get your RMA number within the 30 days, and then send it in within 10 days from that.

when it invoices..
which is when your CC is charged..
in singapore, it might be different..
for me, i have a shorter fuse..
i want to know right away if you don't like your thinkpad..
but then i do business with each customer in a highly personal fashion..

Well, it is Monday and my pad just made it to NC. Does anyone know how long it takes IBM to ship the new pad after the old pad arrives at their dock? All things being equal of course...
I spoke with the rep about upgrading to the ThinkPad Protection Plan. He said this is based on what state you live in because of their service contracts. Here in the sunshine state, IBM can upgrade the warranty on a business account only. We affixed my companies name to the account and he upgraded me for $129 for three years. That mixed with my homeowners should have all my bases covered.
Here is the $3k question. What keeps people from simply dropping their pad before the TPP expires? I personally wouldn't be able to enjoy something I obtain honestly, but surely not everyone holds themselves to the same moral standards as I do!

Hey Trex, How did you get the thinpad protection priced at $129? The only price I have found it foreis $169.TREX wrote:Well, it is Monday and my pad just made it to NC. Absolutely nothing! But what would you gain by doing so?TREX wrote:Here is the $3k question. What keeps people from simply dropping their pad before the TPP expires?
If the machine was completely destroyed, they'd simply replace it with a similar machine from stock or build one from parts.
You'd still, in essence, wind up with a three year old machine.
I've got enough T2x series parts lying about that I could easily build one for a few hundred dollars in out of pocket expenses and I'm certain that IBM could do the same for much less. In three years time I'll be able to do the same for T4x series machines and so will IBM.

Found out that my laptop shipped today with 215 other laptops. WOW That's a lot of laptops. Check the 129 for the ThinkPad Protection Plan...it was 169. Well worth the extra cash considering I am constantly on the move. I got my Targus Defcon1 lock today, and it seems to be a good mix of features and function. I will let you all know how it works in action.

Just curious, what do you mean by "in singapore, it might be different.." (I live in singapore). Can you share some your singapore experiences if you had before?morrow wrote:when it invoices..
