Attention people with both WinXP and Linux installed

#1 Post by kungpow » Wed Feb 15, 2006 10:52 am

Are there any people in this group that have both winXP and Linux installed on the same HDD?

If so I would like to know what they get if they run fdisk from their linux installation:

sudo fdisk -l

I get errors and I have heard of another getting the same errors, so I would like to know if there are others experiencing the same problems.

I have XP and Ubuntu.
"sudo fisk -l" provides the following result

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 3187 25598128+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2 3187 4717 12285000 7 HPFS/NTFS
Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda3 4717 5737 8195040 7 HPFS/NTFS
Partition 3 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda4 5738 7296 12522667+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 * 5738 6168 3461976 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 6169 6221 425691 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda7 6222 7296 8634906 83 Linux

Other than the "does not end on cylindar boundary" I have no errors.
My hard disk was initially partitioned using the "XP" installation CD so I presume it's probably a miscomprehension between "Linux FDisk" and the "XP partition tool".

I don't "mount" my MS partitions, although I can, and my backup image "Acronis" works without any problem. Personally I ignore this error/message as it creates no problems for either system.

Thank you!! You are now the third person with this error, so I guess it must have something to do with IBM machines and Linux that does not work perfect together

BTW: Have you tried to run Partition Magic from WinXP?

"Partition 3 does not end on cylinder boundary" is an informational message and no error. It can be ignored safely. It has nothing to do with the machine type.

What do you base that upon?

I have read that if I later would like to resize the partitions I might get problems because of this error.
