Changing XGA to SXGA on a T43 2686

#1 Post by yourself » Wed Feb 15, 2006 5:31 pm

Hi there, I am new to the forums. I recently received my T43 2868DFU Express model(Lenovo Canada) in the mail, but I had ordered the regular XGA screen with my model. I would like to investigate upgrading this LCD to the SXGA for higher resolution, but do not know what I need to get.

How much will the parts run me? (ballpark range)

upon researching, I realize I might need a cable as well as the LCD. Could I get some help on how involved/dangerous this process of switching is? This is my very first laptop I have owned, but I am technically inclined. :)

Thanks in advance to those who help!

well to replace the LCD panel you have to literally take apart the entire laptop since you have to get at the hinges and the cable.

also you might want to make sure your video card can support the SXGA res. think the ati m7500 cannot. im not really sure tho.

ebay shows the lcd are approx $250USD+

If you can still return the current one, just get one that comes with SXGA+ in the first place.

I agree with dr_st. If you are still in the trial period just return it and get one with SXGA+.
There is no pint of risking. Also I would assume that it will void your warranty.

Not true. ATI 7500 supports SXGA just fine (look at my sig).

thanks for all the replies, I called Lenovo and indeed I am within the 30day return policy, it is from the shipping date, not the order date. phew, considering it took a month and a week to get here.

I am now going to return this model 2686DFU and get the 2686DGU, which comes with a bonus the DVD burner... but u pay for it really. the cost of the system is 350$ more. If the LCD alone to switch was going to cost me $250USD, then I'll just get the upgraded model...

Not to mention that replacing the LCD would void your warranty.

im with the people saying return it and get one that has it to begin with. Only reason I did it to mine is cause i got the laptop for $700, it had a new screen in it, and i paid $220 for the screen and cable together, brand new. I can sell the XGA that I took out for roughly that amount.

yeah, I think just re-purchasing it is a best option. I think I would have been bothered by the "what-if's" forever if I didn't. Besides, ordering the parts would have been a pain, then installation would've been the other hurdle.

Only thing I worry about is the people who complain of headaches and sore eyes from such a small 14.1inch screen with 1400x1200 on it... but I'm willing to take the chance.

I have the option of setting the resolution to 1024x768 on the SXGA screen don't I?

I think so, but I doubt if you would like the result. :o

You can change the size of the fonts and desktop icons, but this doesn't work for everything. Some text, sometimes seen on certain web pages is actually a graphic. This graphic will be displayed at whatever resolution you have your display set to. Changing the font size will have no effect on a text graphic.

so right... on my current setup, I changed from 1024x768 to 800x600 on the XGA screen... horrid!

I'm sure I'll be happy with the SXGA... :)

Use a browser that supports zoom like Opera. I often set zoom because certain pages are too small for sxga+ even on 15".
T440s OK so far.
T420s NVIDIA graphics. Nice, then MB failure.
T400s Workhorse. two of'em, both faulty display with vertical stripes.
T43 °very nice° - MB reflown and dead, two of'em.
T42 15°, dead onboard wireless.
T40, dead memory slot, stolen from me
T30, stolen from me
TP600 dead
