Need to replace Main board on T42

#1 Post by Jlambert » Thu Feb 16, 2006 7:16 am

My T42 2373 CVG has died
I get the error Beeps on startup 1 long and 2 short
Its under Warrenty but IBM are being difficult about accepting it for repair
where can i get a replacement main board
and is it really going to be worth tring to fit it
or should i just keep bothering IBM to fix it
or should i just buy a New T42

Or either the Agent you had talked to did not understantand or I don´t understand.

If problem with motherboard was not negligence, they SHOULD repair it at no cost to you. Anybody here will tell you the same.

Do not try to replace it yourself since it will void warranty forever. Call then again an tell the problem again.

Many times these beeps just meen a bad hardware conection or falty internal battery. These are example of action to be taken:
- Take off the keyboard. Reatach it back.
- Take off the DVD bay.
- If you can get access to BIOS, reset it to default.
- Take off the internal battery and removed for a couple of hours.

These are stepts that the agent should had put you to go through.
X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)

I think the main problem in getting any support is my location
I am a brit working in ALGERIA there seems to be no local IBM office
the details they have listed in their website are no longer valid
the phone numbers qre not in use and the Email address bounces back as undeliverable

Emails direct to IBM just get replied to telling me to contact the local office
they dont seem to understand that these details qre no longer valid

So Batterie is disconnected
Zhen i boot up sometimes i get the Beeps other times the CPU fan starts up then nothing no beeps or boot
How can i access the BIOS during this time

Call the French Helpdesk. They is a big chance that it handles the Algerian incidents. If they don´t ask the agent to consult with his mentors a contact with the SPOC that handles with Algeria. SPOCS do have the contacts of all EMEA region SPOCS.

BIOS usually gives a brieft message in the screen, can you see any? (the fan is a usually device that causes problems at BIOS level.
Don´t forget to remove for two hourd the BIOS button battery and reattach the CD bay, HDD and keyboard.
