AC 4.11a and VPN

#1 Post by jsteele » Fri Feb 17, 2006 2:08 am

I've just run into the strangest problem apparently with the new AC 4.11a

When I'm at home on my wireless network I normally have a CPN connection running to my office. This connection is started by a batch that runs when AC starts up.

I had been using AC 4.01 without any problems. Today I upgraded ACt to 4.11a and now when I open a web browser to any site, makes no difference, it spends significant time looking for the site and the tray indicators for the wireless and VPN connections show activity. After several seconds it will finally locate the site and start displaying, however the display rendering takes several times longer than before. If I disconnect the VPN while the browser is sitting on locating the site the browser will immediately find the site and load it normally.

This did not occur with version 4.01.

In addition, while looking for the web site the system will occsasionally display a list of all of the dial up connections and ask which one should be used. This also did not occur with 4.01.

I haven't had time to test this with anything other than IE but will do so. Very strange behavior.

Backed out AC to 3.81 and reinstalled 4.11a --- problem went away.

I am typing this through a Nortel Contivity based VPN on a T43 with the connection being managed by Access Connections 4.11a, and it is working with no problems at all.

Cheers,

Bill

It could have messed with the policy, or the policy got out of whack..

You can re-install the application, WHILE AT WORK, disable your security policy, reconnect (so your security policy gets updated); your browser should function without problems after that....

If you want to try 4.11 again, uninstall 3.81, reboot, then install 4.11, then reboot again. If you still have trouble, uninstall 4.11, reboot, then install 4.01, reboot, then uninstall 4.01, reboot, then install 4.11 and reboot one last time. You need to make sure all old Access Connection registry entries are removed before installing a newer version. I believe you could also use a registry cleaner program to accomplish this.

Hmmmm..... I run a registry cleaner (Registry First Aid from Rose City Software) on a ~weekly basis and just don't seem to have hardly any of the problems that others report here when it comes to updates Thinkpad utilities.

Food for thought!

Cheers,

Bill
