Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums
First off, use NHC or RMColock to look at the temeperature ranges you are reaching whilst doing everyday tasks; if they are in the normal range, then it is most likely not a hardware problem. You can then use the Thinkpad Fan Control Utility (the link is in my signature) to control the fan noise. Either way, if anything unusual begins to happen, I would take you T41 in for a check up.

Mmmm, it looks like they are in a good range for a T41; the GPU is running a bit higher than the rest. Now you can throttle the fan and see how the temperatures change, also what other processes run when the fan does this? Is it really on all the time?
