Strange keyboard response

#1 Post by bilalmuddassir » Sat Feb 18, 2006 7:23 pm

This is the first time I am using a Thinkpad. I have been a Dell user. This T42 has a strange keyboard response. I am not a slow typer and in any one line in every second word I miss one character. Excessive use of backspace is causing anxiety. :)

Can someone shed light? Should I replace the keyboard? Or is there a software setting to tweak the response. I like the sound the Thinkpad keyboard produces. It is sexy. But may be I am not pressing hard on keys due to my Dell experience?

Ideas?

trying doing a parts lookup to see which keyboard your system has. you can search on ALPS, chicony, and NMB - this is a much discussed issue on these forums.

Sexy? Hm. Maybe that's why I seem to attact coeds when I'm going online here at a local Duke University neighborhood cafe. ;)

As for the keyboard, I hear even the vaunted NMB keyboard is now made in China, and the chances of getting something better are a gamble (IMHO). I think since you're accustomed to another brand, you give yourself time to get accustomed to your TP.

At the risk of sounding like a barker, I suggest you try one of the ways of tilting your TP up a bit, to improve the typing angle. I use a Targus Traveler Coolpad (I have a "guide" on Amazon which talks about it, and I posted customer pics of my T43 on it), but on occasion, I've found that a gel keyboard wrist rest under the rear of a notebook works in a cinch. Or, for more money, find a Port Replicator or Mini-dock. In any case, tilting it up 20º might help your touch-typing.

The keyboards on the Thinkpads are second to none; they have excellent tactile feedback and response, although the exact keyboards vary a tad. I have the NMB Thai model and am pretty happy with it so far.

Also, have a look at the Keyboard Customizer Utility, that should also set some parameters for key sensitivity (in the latest version) that can be useful in this case.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.
