IBM T43p ATI V3200 and Sansung 244T

#1 Post by jimlenz » Mon Feb 20, 2006 4:05 pm

I just purchased a new 24 inch monitor and it runs in 1900 x 1200 mode. Will my video card be able to run the new monitor at this resolution? If not, how easy is it to upgrade the video card in the laptop? Any suggestions on a video card to get? Thanks for your feedback.

The video card cannot be upgraded. The V3200 is one of the fastest and top of the line ATI card out there. There should be no problem running at the 1920 x 1200 resolution.

Some problem that you may encounter is if you are going to use VGA instead of DVI connection. For DVi conneciton you wll have to use a port replicator or a docking station. I would highly recommend to use DVI since VGA will probably not be able to support such high resolution. Even if it does I am pretty sure that the quality will be low.

Another problem that you "may" encounter is that the default ATI or IBM drivers "may" not support that resolution as an option. Not a hardware limitation but software. If there is no such option for external monitor you could use omega drivers. I have used them in the past and they are very reliable as long as you follow the instructions. i.e. uninstall all of the ATI / IBM drivers before installing omega drivers. They offer much more resolution options and 1920 x 1200 will certainly be there.

My T42p (with Fire GL T2, 128 MB) runs the Samsung 244T at 1920 x 1200 perfectly. The monitor, I might add, is great.
